What if my company accidentally put in that I have 2 dependents for tax purposes?
I started my first job after college last August and put 0 in the dependents areas on the tax info sheet but now that it is tax time I've discovered that they have had me down for 2 dependents by mistake all this time so less is being taken out of each of my paychecks for taxes. Is this a big deal since I only worked less than half the year and made around 9000? I'm not sure if I need to have it somehow corrected or if that is possible. Any tax pros out there w/advice on this? Thanks!
Additional Details
Well, good to hear that I'm not going to go to jail or anything...it shouldn't be a problem to pay anything that needs paying in because I've been trying to save as much as possible.

You will end up paying taxes if not enough is taken out.

It sounds like you claimed 2 excemptions on your W4 form instead of 0. Usually if you are single you claim zero like you said you had done (that's wierd how that changed though!) and more taxes are taken out of your paycheck. Since you made so little last year I really don't think it will affect anything for you and you probably will still get back what little you paid out in taxes all year anyway. But, if you had made a lot more, I'm sure claiming 2 excemptions would of been too much and you may have owed taxes this year when you filed. Just make sure that you change your W4 with your payroll dept to 0 excemptions so you can get back on track!

After the IRS finishes burning your house to the ground things will get a little rough. All you do is owe some extra taxes. Happens all the time. Even if you can't pay the full amount, IRS will work out an arrangement with you. Get your current withholding correct for 2008 and then get your taxes figured for 2007 at H+R Block. Then get H+R to figure solid way to repay. Stop worrying about the money. It may be that you can pay a little extra each payday. Relax this won't get you locked up or penalized or anything else.

It very likely won't hurt you much for 2007, you will probably still get a (smaller) refund since you only worked part of the year.

If you only have one job, but work all year, claiming 2 would be likely to come pretty close to breaking even at tax time, either owing a little or getting a small refund.

What you filled out for the employer was W4, which is used by the payroll people to find the right federal income tax withholding table to use. Its only bearing on your tax return is the withholding shown on the W2. You now realize that the more allowances (not dependents) you claim on a W4, the less withholding to show on the W2. I suggest that you file a new W4 for 2008 and review the Pub 15 tables to be sure the mistake does not happen again.
You just find the table for the proper pay period (weekly, bi weekly, etc), find the marital status that you put down, and then find the amount of pay you received. Go to the column for the allowances you claimed and you have now found the proper withholding.
For instance, let's say that you gross 700 a week. The W4 is Single and 0 allowances. The proper withholding is $96. (page 41)

It means you will likely have owe taxes.

Just remember that no matter what the reason YOU owe the tax. The IRS won't care whether they made the mistake or you did on the W4 so don't think "I'll just not pay since it isn't my fault." You need to figure out your taxes NOW and if you can't pay today then start saving up so you'll be able to pay by April 15th. Don't wait until April 15th to find out.

One thing make sure you put in a new W4 now if you are still working there so they'll have the right deductions this year. Check your next paycheck to verify the amount being deducted is correct.

It is not something you need to have corrected for legality's sake. However, if you are listed through your company as married, when you are single..or for having more dependents than you do...your employer is not holding back enough tax out of your paycheck.

When you go to file your Federal Taxes...you will still owe the same amount you would have otherwise, however in the column where you list the taxes you've already paid, your number may come up short and you may owe.

It is 6 of one, half a dozen of the other...but most people/families have a hard time squirreling away money during the year...so to have that extra money you owe come tax time can sometimes be a bit of a problem.
