What information can employers get from a Social Security Number? |

Nothing unless you give them permission. If you do, then they may run a financial background check on you. Sometimes they go further and check where you went to school, and whether you have a police record. But they use all the info on you for that. Not just SSN. SSN is mainly a financial data tracking tool.
The real threat is that uscrupulous coworkers will get into the files and use your eployment application info to impersonate you. Never give your SSN to any employer who hasn't made you an offer. At that time, it's appropriate to share sensitive info with them.
Just be nice about explaining why you're not giving them the info up front, even show them the SSN card, so they don't think you're illegal or something. But don't give them the number until they're making the offer and you've accepted, and you're at the proof of the right to work in the USA stage. |

They can do a background and/or credit check. In many states they are also required to file a new hire report with SSN for tax reasons and in case you owe child support. |

The first 3 numbers will tell them what state you were in when it was assigned to you (if they know the codes). 249 is South Carolina. |

For some what state it was issued from and maybe the year of issuance. Totally useless information for an employer. |

I guess it could be used along with your state id to run criminal and person background checks, if that is a normal function during the hiring process. A company that simply hires you and starts paying you, gets no information about you, they provided payment to SSI from your wages. It all depends on who and what they are searching for that is criteria to be met to hire someone. |

SS will tell them if you can legally work, if your name matches name on issued SS card.
Credit bureaus will link to your credit report based on SSN. |
