If a person earns income more than the basic exemption limit, he is liable to pay Income tax and file Income tax Return disclosing his income and the tax paid by him. This is called 'self assessment'. To make tax collection machinery effective, the Income tax Act imposes responsibility on the persons who pay the amount to the income earners, to deduct tax from the amounts they pay, and remit it to the Government on behalf of the income earners. This tax so deducted is called Tax deducted at source. Shortly TDS. Some of the payments subjected to TDS are, Payment of Salary, Rent, Professional fees, payment to contractors, certain payments made to Non residents etc. The person deducting tax has to issue a certificate to the payee that tax has been deducted at source. It is called 'TDS' Certificate.
Tax deducted at source can be adjusted against the tax payable on Total taxable Income. If TDS is more than the tax payable, tax refund can be claimed when filing the Return of Income.

TDS is Tax Deducation at Source, it is nothing but Income Tax.
When an employee is drawing a salary of Rs. 1,10,000, his employer is liable to deduct TDS (read Income Tax) on his salary part above Rs. 1,10,000 once the employee claims all his/her savings done through LIC, Insurance schemes, PPF, Children School Fees, EPF, House Loans etc.
