A mail in rebate is like a coupon that you sometimes get as a promotion to buy a product.
You buy the product at its regular price in a store, then you fill out the mail in rebate and send it to the address required. Usually it'll ask you to send the receipt or a photocopy of it as a proof of purchase as well.
Once you send it in, the company you sent it too will send you a cheque in the mail for the amount of the rebate! |

When you have a mail in rebate on something you have to keep your receipt. Mail a copy of the receipt and sometimes a UPC number. Make sure you read the directions carefully because if anything is wrong they will not send it to you. I have done mail in rebates for lowes and they send me an actual check. |

When you buy a product which promotes "mail in rebate," a manufacturer of the product is offering you a discount in a form of rebate, but you have to fill in the required info on the rebate request form (usually obtained by a retailer where you bought the product), attach receipt to prove the purchase, and sometimes attach UPC code on the product box. Instructions on how to obtain the rebate is usually listed on the rebate form or included in the product you bought. After you filled out info and attached necessary documents, you mail in all of the paperworks to the address specified on the rebate form. It usually takes 6 weeks or more for them to send you a rebate check. |

When you purchase a product with a mail in rebate it will come with a card that you can mail to the company with your address and all your info.
They will send you back the money that they say. So you pay full price for the item when you buy it but you end up getting some money back later. |

A mail in rebate goes like this:
You pay for something, they say there's a $_____ mail in rebate, you take the item and forms to get the $____ you mail in a request and they send the rebate to you via the mail, its usually a scam since most people dont remember to do it. |

In my personal opinion: It's just a scam to get your address so they can know who to advertise their products towards
In light of that; It is a deal that allows you a kickback of some amount of money after buying a product. The company just wants you to send your receipt and proof of purchase (which usually includes your name and address) and they will send you money back (which you probably paid in higher sales) |

it is when you have to send a copy of the receipt into the company as advised by the sales person, they then send the amount of the rebate through the mail. Companies like doing this because they figure that a majority of people will not bother so they don't have to pay up thus looking like they give deals. |

Trev is right except for the scam part. It's not a scam it is just that people usually forget to mail the rebate form in time or lose the receipt or threw away the box that the item came in and they no longer have the upc symbol. I've never heard of them giving a gift card as the rebate they usually send you a check and it takes a few weeks, it's not immediate. |
