You shouldnt get a tax return as an employee unless you are also registered as self employed or a company director or paying the higher rate of tax....
Its not something that can be explained in an answer...! |

There is no short answer to your question. Your individual circumstances will allways dictate the amount of tax that you have to pay. What is more, you will only be required to complete a Return annually if you fulfill certain specific criteria, not all of which are mentioned in the replies you have received to date.
As you are an employee you can usually expect the right amount of tax to be automatically deducted from your earnings by your employer under PAYE. That said things can go wrong, for example if you receive taxable benefits like use of a car for private purposes. It is usual for the tax due in connection with such benefits to be collected by means of an adjustment in your coding. However, if the benefits change for some reason, for example if you change jobs and the benefits cease, HM Revenue and Customs would need to alter the benefits included in your code to reflect the changes. that have taken place. If they fail to do that, and remember there is a legal responsibility for all taxpayer's to keep them informed of any changes affecting their tax affairs, there is a possibility that too much tax will be paid.
However, this is only one example of where things can go wrong and if your coding includes an adjustment of any kind always check that the right amount has been included in the code at the end of each year when final details of your income and outgoings are known.
And at the end of the day you will find that HM Revenue and Customs will always be more than happy to check that your tax affairs are in order if there is anything you are unsure about or do not understand. |

I got mine in last week. They're complicated and annoyingly long. I don't understand them much either but you have to use the information booklet and have a stab anyway |

If you are employed and on PAYE (as in your employer pays your tax for you), then speak to your HR, or ring up your local tax office and they will help you. |

You are only entitled to a tax refund if you have had too much tax deducted under PAYE, ie if you have been on the wrong tax code. Easiest thing to do is to call in at your local tax office and ask them to check your tax liability for the past 6 yrs - get them to explain how it is all worked out as well - this will put your mind at rest, and it's what they are there for!
Remeber though - its always better for you to owe the taxman than for the taxman to owe you. |

If you are employed then your tax is calculated under the Pay As You Earn scheme (PAYE) by your employer. You should be issued with a payslip everytime your employer pays you and on it will have the amount of tax and National Insurance contributions that your employer has deducted.
At the end of each tax year your employer should also give you a P60 which tells you how much tax and NI you have paid throughout the year.
So basically there is very little that you have to do, and it is your employer that pays the Revenue on your behalf.
For those people who are not in a PAYE scheme, and directors of limited companies they have to complete a self assessment tax return, this tells the Revenue how much income they have received through out the year, and from that the amount of tax and NI contributions they have to pay.
The assessment is done on all income, which not only includes things like payment for jobs done, but also things like what dividends a director has drawn from a company, and is as others have said quite complicated. But help is at hand at any tax office free of charge.
As you are an employee of a company you have already paid, and as I said before you have very little to worry about.
If you have concerns about how much tax you are paying, go to your local tax office as fengirl has said. |

Tax return is: "the form that the government requires a taxpayer to file with the appropriate official by a designated date to disclose and detail income subject to taxation and eligibility for deductions and exemptions, along with a remittance of the tax due or a claim for a refund of taxes that were overpaid" according to Legal encyclopedia.
Tax refund are the amounts paid back by the Taxation agency for overwithholding tax, over estimating income, credits, exemptions etc.
You only get a refund if you file a Tax return (SA100-UK/1040-USA), assuming the above ! |

There are a number of reasons why you might be due a rebate:
+ Earning less than 5235 pounds in a tax year
+ Travelling abroad.
+ Working part time
+ Only working part of a tax year
+ Changing jobs through the year
+ Paying emergency tax
You can either apply to the Inland Revenue which can be a bit time consuming, as they tend to throw you from pillar to post with forms and applications to fill in.
Alternatively you can use a service such as:
http://www.TAXFIX.co.uk
....who will get your tax back for you. Generally using a company will be quicker and you will probably get more. I know that http://www.TAXFIX.co.uk operate on a no rebate no fee basis so you don't need to worry. |
