What is an emergency tax?

It's a tax code which is applied if the tax office doesn't know your full circumstances ie married, children etc. It will change when you let them know your circumstances and you will get the over payment back

Do you mean an emergency tax code? this happens when your employer has not been notified of the correct code to calculate your deductions - usually in new job. Have yo handed over your P45 from your previous job? If not - do so. otherwise they should give you a form to fill in stating that this is your only job and should contact their tax office to get the correct code to use for you.

It's when they don't have all of your details referring to how much tax you are supposed to be paying so they'll take a high rate until you sort it out, your employer should have the necessary forms. Don't worry though because once you give the details you will be refunded any overpayments.

-Mr E-
It is a tax code your employer will issue you if you did not provide them with a P45 from your previous employer. Emergency tax usually takes more tax than what you owe, so the good news to you is that you will get a tax rebate once it is all sorted and so you will have a nice some of money to go shopping with lol!

Don’t rely on your employer to sort this out for you as I have experience problems in the past! Contact your tax office with the number stated on the bottom of your payslip and that will get things moving quicker!

Hope this helps! Have fun!

emergency tax is implememented when your current tax/code records are not availale of calculated, you pay at this rate to ensure you coer the maximum amount of tax payable to stop you getting a hefty bill or hefty sums taken out of your salary when they have worked out your tax code and how much you should pay.

Another word for'Council Tax' and what the government would like all council house tenants to pay for emergency services, such as fire..ambulance...police patrols and refuse collectors.

Part Time Cynic
A very expensive thing that will take chunks out of your wages.
Also something you need to chase because you might get a rebate after they give you your proper tax code.

Sorry, but no-one on here has written much sense, just opinions.
The current emergency tax code number is 522L, used on a month or week 1 basis, depending on frequency of wages. You are put on it when starting employment if you don't hand over P45, for some reason employer can't use P45, or you complete form P46 in a certain way (for example, you don't say it's your first job after leaving full-time education).
On an emergency code, for each payday, you will get the correct amount of tax allowance, but for that month/week in isolation. Normal tax is calculated on a cumulative basis. Emergency tax should be approximately correct, unless there have been weeks when you have been unemployed or earning less than your tax allowance. Then you may have a backlog of tax allowance and be due a refund. It may also be wrong if monthly/weekly wage varies a lot.
Marriage and children have no relevance. There are no tax allowances for either these days.

god knows, the ******* gov tax anything and everything.
