HMRC won't have forgotten about it. Although they may not have been able to pursue the debt whilst you have been abroad, when you are registered here again, action of some sort will be taken to get the money. In view of the amount, it won't be Magistrates Court. If you have been moving around, it is unlikely you will have enough assets for distraint. So would guess it will be County Court, or bankruptcy.
You can contact HMRC, and ask for time to pay. There is no guarantee you will get it. Interest continues to accrue until the debt is paid, unless legal proceedings are taken. Then interest stops at the date proceedings are instituted. |

Sounds like you need to talk to an Independant Financial Advisor and / or even an accountant. I hate those guys, they are so blood sucking. But if you don't sort it out PDQ, HM Inspector of taxes will be coming down on you like a ton of Alister Darlings (a TWIT with a capital A if ever there was one).
My advice would be to stay where you are, 40 grand is better in your pocket, my government only waists everything we pay it on benefits cheats and fat cat bankers (with a capital W).
Good luck. |

Pay it, you ***. The rest of us have to. Also, do you realise that when they catch up with you, which they always do, you'll also have incurred 3 years interest.
But if this is a laugh, then thanks for the points. |

Go back and make a payment plan and agreement with them. They can't get blood from a turnip, so you should be able to get acceptable monthly payments. |

If you just did a runner, you'll probably be arrested on arrival. I suggest you contact HMRC and put a proposition to them. |

I'd stay where you are! The weather's crap here anyway and we have enough tax dodgers already |

You owe £40000 in tax. The tax man will be on to you when you start working in the UK again. You can pay in instalments as far as I know but you still need to pay it. If you don't want a huge tax bill stay where you are. |
