turbotax.com - it's free to file state tax returns and if you qualify it's free to file the federal as well. (refering to 1040ez forms)

IRS Free File Alliance. It's free for millions of taxpayers.
The FFA has many partners, two of which are the most popular, H & R Block and Turbo Tax.
Depending on your state and/or chosen tax service, you can have your state return e-filed for free as well. If not, you can either pay a small fee or go to your state's dept. of revenue and file for free from there.
The FFA doesn't start until mid-January but you can get more information here: http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

online filing for free is available for free for people who meet certain income guidelines.
The IRS also offers FreeFile "If you earned $54,000 or less in 2007, you can use Free File to prepare your taxes online beginning in mid-January 2008 at the IRS website."
However, last year I still had to pay to file my state return.

add on: IRS.gov has links to sites who will file your federal taxes for free as long as you meet certain income requirements (as long as you aren't rich, you qualify, the upper limit is pretty high). Those sites will charge you for filing your state income taxes, though.
I use the H&R Block website, since they will do my federal income tax return for free and it's pretty easy. You enter the info on your W-2's, any other pertinent tax documents (like student loan interest statements or mortage statements) and answer a few questions, and they do it for you.
I live in TN, which does not have a state income tax, so my return is free, but H&R Block will file your state income tax return for about $15-20 at the same time they file your federal return.

I use www.taxcut.com, which is owned by H&R Block. You can go to www.irs.gov and see what free sites they offer.

Turbo Tax is not free, but it is the easiest.

You can transfer your federal info to state return with the push of a button.

Go to Turbotax.com
