cammfow | What is income tax used to pay for(UK)? |
I understand that NI tax is used for the NHS and Welfare when u become unemployed or sick.
council tax is used for schools, home helps(this should be under NI as it is health related), refuse collection, police, fire, care homes(another one I think should come out of NI contributions), nurseries, Museums and art galleries, Roads and street lighting(why the need for road fund licence then??), city parks, planning, consumer and trading standards, licencing, concesionary travel, libraries and leisure centres.
Then we have all the other indirect taxes we pay that go directly to the national government.
With all the taxation revenue the government has, is there really a need for this tax( which I understand was introduced as a TEMPORARY TAX during the napolionic wars in the 19th century) |

NI contributions are used to fund contribution based benefits like Incacapacity Benefit and State pension, not the NHS. Even with NI conts there is a massive shortfall between what is paid in as NI conts and the benefits paid out. this is made up with Income tax. The same with local authorties, the Council tax only covers a fraction of council costs the major source of finance for councils is the block grant issued yearly from central government from Income Tax Income Tax is also used tofund the NHS.
The UK has a number of taxes but everything that is provided by the satte has to be paid for. If we want decent hospiatls, school, doctors, protective services etc then unfortuantely we need to be taxed. |

You forget the BIG one.
We are a nuclear power, we have nuclear subs and nuclear air force.
Then we have to fund an army in Iraq and Afghanistan
Then there are all those CCTV cameras and people to watch them.
Other countries don't have this expense. |

My understanding is slightly different. NI is not hypothecated and therefore the revenue raised does not have to spent of the Health Service. Similarly with the Road Fund Licence, which is now called Vehicle Excise Duty, approx £38bn is raised but only a fraction of that is spent on our roads. Similarly you might like to know that we have no long term investemnts to pay for our pensions, curent pensions are paid our of current revenues. Perhaps this is one thing that should be addressed? |

This really gets my goat with any Government. All monies raised goes into one big pot, which is then used for all the various pay-outs. I think the Government should balance each account, road and fuel tax be used for road maintenance, NIC for benefits as you state. To a degree, Council Tax pays for local services, but the Government subsidies have been withdrawn over the years, resulting in much higher tax for less services.
You note that there is always enough money to pay for MP salary and pension increases, and for all the benefits they claim. |

The money we all pay in tax is not ring fenced for any particular project or item. If it was then Road Tax would be spent on the roads and then we would have the best road system in the world. Local taxes do tend to go to the borough/county concerned but all the others go to a central pot and the the government dips in for whatever it needs. Typical needs are illegal wars, paying MPs over inflated expenses. and so on. I know of pensioners that have incomes of about £11000 per year from pensions paid into and they are taxed around £1000 a year. The whole tax system has got out of hand and Brown is the one solely responsible with Blair and the Iraq war aiding. |
