In the UK generally if you are an employee the firm you work for submits your pay details and deducts tax on behalf of Inland Revenue through a system called PAYE (pay As You Earn). However if you are receiving other income, from shares, lettings or so called unearned income you are supposed to inform Inland Revenue - they may then send you a tax return to complete.
If like me you are self-employed every year you have to complete and submit a tax return. From this fascinating form you calculate how much Inland Revenue are going to rob you of. |

It is for anyone who gets an income whether earned through work, or through interest on savings bonds or other investments eg renting out a house. |

I think you mean "What is `A tax return`."
The way you phrased it means the tax man sends money to you. But I think you mean "TAX RETURN" which means a form you have to complete every year.
If you are self employed you must complete and return the tax form so the I.R. can demand money from you if you have earned more than the allowed sum depending on your tax code.
If you are employed by someone they automatically deduct tax each week, the amount depending on your tax code, and you virtually never see a tax return form;
If you are unemployed, or of pension age, you only need to declare any money that you have earned during the year over and above what you are allowed. Most times it will not be more than that.
However, if you have to ask the question, I would guess that you would not have to submit any tax forms or you would have heard about it before now.
Good luck. |

You are responsible for makeing your own return if one is due!
Very British....
If you are a higher rate tax payer or have capital gains/losses (subject to certain limits) you have to do one even if you are PAYE (ie employed).
Is Self employed you need to register, if not you usually get sent one automatically once you reach higher rate tax bracket..
confused yet? |

If you are doing any self employed work or you are employed in more than one job you will need to complete one too.
Inland Revenue will advise if you are required to or not.
A tax return is a form that one completes to declare earnings / income to the tax man, he ensures you are not paying too much tax or advises if you are not paying enough tax. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you will get a tax rebate (refund).
The latter being the purpose of a tax return and it is not necessary for everybody to complete one nor is it just for business owners. |

It is for any person who is working who does not have it done for them,ie employed persons, only if you work for yourself will this usually be necessary, |

Basically it's only business people who have to submit them so if you work for someone else you will be PAYE (Pay As You Earn). I'm not sure how it is if you have a company car though |
