MACK DADDY | What is the IRS definition of "head of household"? if it's just my wife and myself (no kids) and I earn..... |
more than her, would I be considered the head of household for tax purposes? |

always talk to your tax advisor about tax issues. however, usually that refers to a single parent who has custody of the child(ren). |

No. Someone married and living with their spouse can't file as head of household. But as married people, you get an even better deal - filing jointly. Rates for that are lower than head of household, which is only for someone who is single but has a dependent, and they meet certain other rules.
File jointly, which means you'll add the two incomes together but get an exemption for each of you. |

There are five ways to file taxes:
Single
Married Filing Jointly
Married Filing Separately
Qualifying Widow(er)
Head of Household
The Head of Household filing status usually refers to an unmarried taxpayer. It never refers to a taxpayer who is living with their spouse. The taxpayer must have a dependent child, or certain other relative, living in the home. Lastly, the taxpayer must have paid over half of the household expenses. |

No, you are not a "Head of Household" for tax purposes. Your options are to file Married, Filing Jointly or Married, Filing Separately. In nearly all cases the best way is to file Married, Filing Jointly. HOH status is NOT and option. |

Nope, 'head of household' means that there is a dependent being supported in the home. You and your wife are "married filing jointly" or "married filing seperate"
It doesn't matter who earns more to the IRS it's about having dependents or not. |

You are not "Head of Household"
Your choices are Married filing Jointly or Married filing Separately.
That is it! |
