What is the average amount you pay to buy a house?

Varies too much by area to give you a reasonable answer. Some places, $100K might be average, and in a small rural town, average might be considerably less than that. If you're in a major city in CA, or NYC or Boston, average would be far higher.

Used to be the average house was about $120,000...but last year it went up to about $200,000 (at least in our area). 20 percent downpayment. You'd need to get a fixed mortgage. So you'd probably need incomes of $200,000 reasonably between you and your wife to move in there comfortably.

It completely depends on where you are. I find that www.zillow.com is a pretty reasonable source for information on approximate home prices in neighborhoods. I like it because you can search over large areas with one search.

Depends on the area of the country you live in.

Where I live, the average two-bedroom house goes for about $650,000.

It depends on: where ? when? and how much money you have.

that is a hard question for you to ask, unless you are comparing the cost of living/buying a house if you are considering to move. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and average cost of house's here are 130k. But you also have to compare average salaries and household incomes when comparing home prices.
I think for the money we make in Pittsburgh the cost of living it is quite low. But we have the higest tax's in the United States. We are always in the top 7 of all cities for tax's.
I work in a bank and my friend has the same position in New York City, we both make the same amount of money and it is alot cheaper for me to live then him. Look at it like that when comparing areas. Also, Yahoo has a cost of living index to compare different areas to your own to get an idea of how things would cost in that city.

Hope this helps

What you must remember before you even think about money is to determine where you want to live. Remember the old axiom "Location, location, location". A smaller house in a good location is more liquid than a larger house in a remote or questionable location. If and when you get serious and think you have the assets to own a home (don't forget that when you buy it you have to maintain it) go to a realtor and ask them for help in making a purchase. Also talk to a banker and find out what requirement they might have as a lender of money. I'd also check out the web for advice on buying a house. The more you know... If you want to know an average $ amount for a house, take all of the integers from $0-10million, add them together, and divide by 10million. That ought to keep you busy for awhile.
