What is the average cost of getting your taxes done by a taxpreparer?

There is no meaningful average cost. It all depends upon how complex your return is. It generally starts around $30 - $50 for the simplest return (1040EZ) at a storefront tax prep mill and goes up from there. People with long, complex returns can pay several thousand dollars for professional service from a CPA or tax attorney.

I use H & R Block and they say the average is $66.00. Call a local tax place and ask them--maybe it will be for.

It all depends on what forms you will be filing. Most tax places charge by the amount of forms that they have to fill out, and on top of their preparer fees, they usually have banking fees. That is because it mostly functions as a refund anticipation loan. That is, the government doesn't issue refunds for 3-8 weeks or something like that, but you would like to have your refund sooner. So the tax places issue you what essentially boils down to a loan, and then when your refund arives, they'll use your refund to pay off the loan. This means that they'll be adding loan fees on top of the preparer fees and that'll make your return more expensive than whatever they tell you is their average fee.

There is no set answer for this, it depends on what forms you will use, what compainys you use ect..... Also where in the country you are from. I am in upstate NY and pay $300-$400 but my taxes are very complex as I am a landlord and own my own business.

It depends on your needs and the preparer's credentials and how they bill their services.

Too much.Use taxact.com. Walks you through every step and you can start/stop and return at a later time if need be,
It's free but they do try to get you to upgrade throughout. Either ignore the message or upgrade if you want. It's a great program.

In 2006 single filers pay 10% on taxable income from $0 to $7,550. The rate changes to 15% for income between $7,550 and $30,650. Income over $30,650 is taxed at 25%... and the rate keeps going up as your income level goes up, eventually tapping out at 35%.
What is your average tax rate? It's your total tax liability divided by your total income. Enter those numbers on the next page and we'll tell you what your average tax rate is!
