What is the best company to do my taxes this year?
It's almost w2 time and I need to make sure that I can get every penny back that is humanly possible. Normally my mom uses tax cut and does mine for me, but being a student of software engineering myself, I definitely know that these companies can cut corners to ensure the fact that having one of their accountants do it would be more efficient and expensive. However I am willing to pay if it will yield a bigger refund. I am so strapped for cash right now I want to make sure that each and every thing is accounted for. I was also wondering if I need to have an accountant to help me fill out the fafsa to apply for government financial aid for my college expenses. I am currently a full time junior and I file independently if that is a factor. Please someone help me to make the best possible financial decisions.

You're in college and work part time and think you need an accountant to fill out the FAFSA and do your taxes? That's not likely to be necessary:

You don't have any children, do you? Are you married? Have a house with a mortgage? Pay medical expenses that are more than 7.5 percent of your income? Have huge earnings from stocks or investments? Run your own business? Earn any of your money in another country?

If none of the above apply, then you can do your own taxes in about 20 minutes, using any of the online services. Or print the form from www.irs.gov and fill it in yourself. Look at each item one line at a time and fill in the numbers. If you pay attention to what you're doing, there's almost no way you can get it wrong.

You'll likely get back most or all of what you've had withheld from your paychecks during the year. An accountant or tax professional isn't going to be able to get you any more than that.

Once you've done your taxes, all you need to do for the FAFSA is plug in the numbers from your and your parents' tax forms where they tell you to plug them in. Again, just read each item carefully and it's simple to do it yourself. No accountant required.

just do it yourself!

I've used Turbo Tax for the last 8 years and have been happy with them but I do not feel that you need an accountant to complete your fafsa.

Your return sounds very straightforward, so almost any even halfway competent preparer should be able to do it - there aren't going to be extra things that some expert would find.

If you are under 24, a full time student, and living at home with your mom, there's a real good chance that legally she can claim you as a dependent - if she can, even if she doesn't, you aren't legally allowed to claim yourself.

The FAFSA form can be confusing, and you need to read the instructions, but I wouldn't have an accountant help to fill it out - for the most part, they'd just be asking YOU for answers to the question, then entering what you told them.

H&R Block. If nothing else because you say you want some help with your fafsa and they will help. Try to get the others to do that! If you want help with your fafsa, try to go when they not at their busiest (last week of January and first week of February). After all you are asking for help and are going to get it for free, so don't expect it while their lobbies are jammed those weeks with people ready to pay to have their taxes done.
