What is the best way to file for taxes for a first time married couple?
My husband and I married in March of 2007? We have three children. I am wondering what way we can file and still get a good amount back. Last year I filed and received $5,000 and he filed and received $3,000. Now that we are married I think we might not even get close to that amount. Someone said we may beable to file seperate. I was wondering if that is true?

I know the feeling. Seems like we are punished for getting married. You can file married separately but I think joint is better (at least it always has been for me). You can get blank forms off the IRS website and do them yourself both ways and pick the best one for you.

Good Luck!

You can file married (joint) or married (filing separately). Run the numbers both ways, but usually the joint return is the way to go.

IF you trust yourself to follow directions and be thourough a software program like turbo tax may be right for you. I believe turbo tax will split your return into married filing seperatly if it is more beneficial. If you are not comfortable with this a local CPA firm will be able to help. Unless you made changes to your withholdings at work or had a good bit of investment income you refund should still be in the same ballpark. If your refund is still that high you should look into giving your employers new w-4's and changing your withholding allowances in order to keep more of your money throughout the year. If you are disciplined you can direct the extra on each paycheck into savings or up your 401(k) or ira contributions.

The best thing to do is to file the right way. Which is married filing jointly. Because thats the truth. If you have 3 kids you will definatly get money back. I used to work for a tax agency and its just so annoying how some people want to make up stuff or lie just to get a couple more dollars.
Geez people get what you're entitled to get instead of being money hungry people, no matter what your economical situation might be.

Married filing jointly. You can file separately, but you won't be entitled to claim all of the exemptions.

I need to know also.

legally you have to file married filing joint because you lived together and are married..

remember you dont want the IRS coming after you newlyweds because you made false claims on your return

The best way for you to file is Jointly you will get your EIC and still get a good amount back. If you file seperatly you will not get as much back.
