Can't criticise the maths or explanations of the previous answerers here but why make it so tricky where someone would need to use a calculator or be able to do tricky mental maths in their head? Easier if it's only £100 but what if it's £59.95 ... try multiplying THAT by 1.15 without a calculator!! :)

So the easy peasy way that almost anyone could do easily and quickly (in my opinion) would be this ...

Let's use 100 purely as an example. Take 10% of it - easy £10. Now take half of that (which will give you the 5%) which is ... £5. Now simply add those together 100 + 10 + 5 or £115. Yes same answer and the maths basically come down to the same thing but what do you think is easier/simpler? :)

Even a tricky amount - 29.95 ... 10% is £2.99 and half (call it £3 as we rounded down the 10%) so half is £1.50. Now add 29.95, 2.99 and 3 together (and you can add on 1p to make the sum even easier then knock it off again if you like) ...

Call it 29.95 plus 3 plus 1.50 and you get £34.46 - less the 1p is £34.45. Bingo. Might SOUND more complicated but to me it's simpler, that's all.

Anyway it's not what *I* think that's important, questioner, but what *YOU* think that matters. :)

Cya. Nick.

From the NET, multiply by.15.
From the GROSS multiply by 3/23.

Let a = Total price including VAT = 1.15 x the nett price.
Then nett price = a/1.15
And VAT = a - a/1.15.

Say the product/service cost is £85:

85/100*15 = 12.75

85 divide by 100 times 15

Total (exl VAT) = £85.00

VAT = £12.75

Total (inc VAT) = £97.75

its 15% added onto the price so the way you look at it is,,,,

you want 15% added on, so start with 100
then add 15
so thats 115
divide that by 100
= 1.15

then times 1.15 by the price for example....

50 * 1.15 =57.50

devide the price by 100 then times by 115

bowtie_teddy
If the price is exclusive of VAT multiply it by 1.15.
If the price is inclusive of VAT divide by 115 and multiply by 15. This will give you the VAT element.
