What is the difference between income support amd working tax credit?

**Kesha**
sparkey almost got it right. its true income support is something you get if you CANT work e.g. mother of young child, ill health but not disabled etc. If you just havent got a job you get job seekers allowance.
Working tax credits can be claimed by anyone who is aged 18 and over and is working 37 hours a week and earning less than £20,000 per year. you can claim working tax credit if you are a parent of a child under 16 and work 16 hours a week or less.

The reason why you get less income support, is because if you get income support you are automatically entitled to full housing and council tax benefit (you pay no rent or council tax) so in essence you need less to live on. Working tax credit doesnt entitle you to that so you still have all bills to pay so you get more.

sparkey
income support
is what you get to live on if you are not working
tax credit
is a payment you get if you are in a low paid job to make your money up to a reasonable ammount

boo!!
Income support is a benefit you recieve when you are not working or are working part time - under 16 hrs. Working tax credit is a supplement to your wage (not really a benefit) that you recieve, the amount you recieve depends on your wage and your personal circumstances (children etc). You need to work over 16 hrs to qualify.

They are 2 entirely different things. It's like saying what's the difference between chocolate and athletics.

Feck All. This fecking government will still find a way of creaming it back out of you when you need it more than you did when you originally made the claim.

Five thousand pounds!

Income support is paid to people who can't work such as single mums. You are allowed to work just a few hours while claiming it. Tax credit is a top up on a low income when you are working. It looks at what you earned in the last full tax year, at the moment that is 2006 to 2007 and calculates how much extra you need. If you can work then you have to claim Jobseekers Allowance

You have to work 30+ pw if single or part of a couple and 16+pw if a single parent to get tax credits

tax credit gives you more but entitles you to less.
