What is the difference in filing taxes by mail and e-filing?
I know e-filing takes less time and gets processed sooner, however does it make a difference in how much you get back?

The only difference is how quickly you get your money. The amount of your refund doesn't change.

If you e-file and choose to have your refund deposited directly to your bank by the IRS it takes about 8 to 14 days to receive your money.

If you file a paper return by mail and request a refund by paper check it takes 6 to 8 weeks to get your money.

Other combinations of filing and payment will fall somewhere in between.

As far as the amount of any refund goes, there is no difference. (Of course this assumes that you don't go to one of the tax mills and get one of their rip-off loans, including "Quick Pay" that deducts any fees from your refund. Those cost a fortune.)

Some tax places or software charge a filing fee for e-filing but most taxpayers can avoid that by using the Free E-File link on the IRS website. Many states offer similar free services for state tax returns as well. However none of that has any impact on your REFUND itself. Even if you have to pay a fee, your REFUND will be the same as if you chose a paper check in the mail.

You get the same amount back. Efiling is just faster.

E-file goes directly from your computer to the IRS server. Last year I got my refund back in about 5 days from when I filed online.

the only difference is the amount of time it takes to receive your tax refund.

About four weeks.

It does not make any difference on how much you get back. Some places charge you to efile and that might be a consideration.

angela
the only difference is if you efile (versus mail in) there is a $15 charge..but it's worth it to get your tax refund back in less than 2 wks!
