Companies have until January 31st to send you your W2s, so as soon as you get it you can file. |

Paper return in the mail: Today
E-filed return, without any of the AMT forms: About Jan 15th. (The formal e-filing date has not yet been announced.)
E-file return with any of the AMT forms: Feb 15th. (This is tentative, according to the IRS.)
Regardless of the above, you can't file until you have all of your records and tax statements (W-2s, etc.) in your hand.
As a practical matter, most folks won't be able to file until the first week of Feb since employers are only requried to have W-2s in the mail (not your hand, or even postmarked) until Jan 31st. |

As soon as you have all your W-2's, 1099's, etc. you can file but the IRS isn't accepting e-filed returns until January 11th. |

You can file now by mail, or starting 1/14 if you efile. If you use one of the following forms
• Form 8863, Education Credits.
• Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits.
• Form 1040A's Schedule 2, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A Filers.
• Form 8396, Mortgage Interest Credit and
• Form 8859, District of Columbia First-Time Homebuyer Credit.
you can’t efile until 2/11, and if you send your return by mail before that, they’ll just hold it and not process it until then.
You can’t file until you have all of your tax paperwork like your W-2’s. |
