The Federal government mandates $5.15 per hour. Each state may legislate any amount greater than the Federal minimum. If the states are silent, then the Federal mandate is in force.
Minimum wage law is nothing but a political feel good measure. It does nothing as labor costs are passed onto consumers. The real effect is nothing as wage earners are consumers too. It is a government mandate that forces us to value a service more than we really do. |

Federal minimum wage is currently $5.15 an hour. Many states mandate a higher minimum wage than that - if they do, then that overrides the federal 5.15. A few states have mandated minimum wages lower than 5.15 - in those states, the federal $5.15 is in effect.

Well now the federal minium wage in New York is $6.75. It depends on where you live in some other states like New Jersey it is like $6.50. Most likely in no matter what area you live in, in the U.S. the minium wage is most likely to between $6.00-$7.00. |
