Yes, it's strictly for funding the BBC and yes, I'd agree with you. It does need to be looked at.

I've lived in four countries and never had to pay a TV license fee until moving to England. Bummer!

(Of course, that said --- some of the BBC shows are pretty good, especially the documentaries. I do watch them from time to time.)

Because once again the BBC get the backing of our stupid government. I agree they should ban the fee, and either advertise or you choose to pay a subscription.

Well the bbc is the worlds premier broadcaster and the unique point about them is that they have a remit. That means they have to provide certain programming. The programming must cover ALL tastes and desires of the British public. But also the bbc has the ability to produce amazing programmes that would not be financially viable otherwise. The bbc is a public service and the rest of the world enjoys many of our shows and documentaries.

It's a tax to raise money for the government.

I actually think that the TV Tax is a good idea.

It funds a world wide public services broadcaster. You don't just get BBC1-4, but you also get all of the BBC radio stations, a world wide 9and world class) news reporting service, and the BBC internet services.

People who live in the UK also get access to the BBC online video and audio archive. This goes a lot further than just the iPlayer, there are documentaries going back several decades. A while back I wanted footage of the Tiananmen Square riots so I went to the BBC, they provided me with archive footage and news reports that I'd have had to have paid an archivist in a museum to find otherwise.

Not everybody knows this, but the TV tax doesn't just pay for the BBC, it also pays for Channel 4's public service broadcasting, too, and it funds the arts and educational programming.

If America had a public service broadcaster like the BBC people would know a lot more about what really goes on, not just what Fox and CNN tell them is happening.

It is a point of view that the TV Licensing arrangements in the UK are unfair but nevertheless it is the law and if you want to operate a TV here you need to pay the licence fee. The upside is the the BBC does provide many many high quality programs that are sold throughout the world as well as high quality radio that cater for many interests that would be uneconomic to provide if done on a commercial basis.

its meant to be so that we can have neutral television without any
biase from advertisers etc.
its supposed to maintain freedom of speech broadcasting etc.
of course it doesn't always, and yeah its a lot of money is suppose.
but we actually watch it quite a lot and listen to it on the radio.
its good to have no adverts, but i believe the time has come for a review. trouble is if you have it removed from your tv what is to stop you
listening on a radio to the bbc?
difficult and really don't know the answer.

Harry O
it's not that bad we also get bbc iplayer lol !! yay £160 a year for bbc iplayer!!

also it pays the actors.
