I really wouldn't worry about that, TT - if you want to live there just go and claim social secuity, let them support you. Perfectly acceptable apparently.

I assume you are referring to Federal income tax. We have a graduated system. That means the larger your income, the higher the tax rate. At present the highest rate is 35%. Lower incomes with certain credits may actually pay a negative income tax. Some state and local governments also have income taxes. In addition, earned income is subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes totaling 7.65% for the employee and 7.65% for the employer or 1.3% for self employed individuals. I have completely ignored corporate taxes and sales taxes. In short, ther is no short answer. |

Income tax? It depends on your income - can range from zero to nearly 35% for federal. |

Depends on your income. It's a progressive tax, not a flat rate. |

Tax rate on what? There are MANY taxes in the US, just like as in most countries. The Federal income tax varies from 0% to 35%, based upon income, filing status, number of dependents, deductions etc. There are so many other taxes at all levels of government that it's really not possible to peg a tax rate for the US per se.
Sir Terrance: We've left that crate of soggy tea in the National Will for you. As soon as you retake the land, you can have it back.
Sorry about the interest though, old chap, though one would hope that its historic value should make up for a fair bit of that. (We did try to have a nice cuppa, but it was a bit off as one would imagine.) |

If you are referring to income tax, there is no set rate. It is a progressive tax rate that gets higher as you make more money. Also, you will be subject to paying either Social Security Tax or Self-Employment Tax depending your employment status.
Depending on the state that you live or work (could be more than one), you would be subject to state income tax as well. |

Income tax? Sales tax? Estate tax? gas tax? Property tax? Corporation tax? Capital gains tax? Excise tax? Transfer tax? etc, etc, etc.
There are so many different taxes that vary by state/locality/income level/and various other conditions.
There is no simple answer to your question. Sorry. |

All I know is, they owe a whole load to we British, as compensation for throwing a crate of our tea in to Boston Harbour. We want it back. With interest. |

If we knew our real tax rate and it was a question that really had an answer, then you would see a rebellion in the U.S.
the most you can pin it down is to look at the sales tax at the register. depends on the city, but sales tax is about 7% or so. it varies. hidden taxes..? forget it, your guess is as good as mine. income tax? well, you'll find out when you pay someone 100 bucks to figure it out for you at the end of the year. |
