What kind of trouble will you be in for not filing taxes?
I don't understand why you get in trouble in the 1st place. Isn't it the persons loss if they don't file and get there money back? I don't think it should be against the law.

I don't owe the IRS. I think I might get around $160 back so will the government just take it and I don't have to worry about it? Or can I go to jail for not getting it....I haven't gotten my papers yet to file so thats why I'm asking.

You could go to jail for tax evasion. -L

Why even chance it and why not just go ahead and file? It is so darn easy if you do it online and use H & R Block or some other tax preparer online service. It really only takes an hour or so and if you are due a refund, why not get it and enjoy it instead of worrying if not filing will ever catch up to you in the future?

You won't get into trouble for not filing if you are due a refund since the penalty is based on the amount of the unpaid tax. Your penalty is the loss of your refund. While it's technically against the law to not file, the IRS gets to keep your money so it's a wash.

You only have problems if you owe.

What is your income? Even if you are only receiving $160 back from the IRS, you may be required to file if your income is above the filing requirements. You aren't penalized for not filing if you are entitled to a refund. The problem is, if the IRS sees a large W-2 and has no record of your tax return, they will send you a notice. If you don't file, the IRS files your return for you, giving you no credits you may be entitled to. If they come up with a balance due, you'll get a letter from them. Of course, you can always do your return at that point and contest their calculations. But, that definitely isn't my recommendation. Go ahead and file yourself to save yourself the big hassle of arguing with the IRS.

ITS NOT AGAINST THE LAW UNLESS YOU OWE MONEY, BUT IF YOU HAVE REFUND COMING WOULDN'T YOU WANT TO GET IT BACK INSTEAD OF GOV USING IT

to answer your question no you cant get in trouble for not filing your taxes the gov. wants your money so if you owe then yes they will get you but if they owe then no thats just money they dont have to dish out

Hmmm... There are lots of people who do not file each year. If you don't owe taxes then it should not matter.. if they audit you.. then you get your refund.. ( I got money back EVERY time I got audited.. 5 years in a row.. not much.. and extra $20 or $30)

Jen
the IRS in happy if you don't file, if your owed a refund. its if you owe them then they will penalize you.

your not going to go to jail for not getting your 160 back.there is no law that says you have to file if the government owes you money, and not the other way around. but make sure that your getting a refund back, and you don't owe. the IRS even has a link, where if you use it to to do your taxes, its free (if you qualify) and you get your money back. something tells me you don't get a 160 dollars for an hours worth of work, and you can be sure you that you don't owe. also, down the line, if you want to get a mortgage, or a student loan, a copy of your 1040 comes in very handy

JustShutUp
I wish it was that easy! Fact is, it is the law. Secondly you may not indeed be getting a refund! And even if you continue to not file, and would be getting a refund each year, when they finally do catch up to you, you'll get an audit, then get fined, and you'll be oweing the IRS money that was yours to keep!
