uk VAT is charged at 17.5% on most goods and services, childrens clothing and some food products are exempt from VAT. some product also incur Duty, which are fuel ciggeretes Alcohol aswell as VAT items imported from a non EU country also incur customs duty and VAT. VAT is always 17.5

M.A.W.
VAT stands for Value added tax. In UK VAT varies depends on good and service. Normally, VAT is 17.5% but it is 8% on insurance. Moreover, VAT is exempt on food, travel, books and reading materials.

You can claim VAT back when you go abraod from the country. For more information refer this book. CAT Paper 9, last chapter of this book.

The standard rate is 17.5%, however some things like Insurance installments are charged at 8%. Some items such as childrens clothing is 6%, and some are 0% rated.

Believe me, the Inland revenue count 0% as a rate.

Davy B
Not quite so simple! Everything is charged at 17.5% UNLESS the law says differently. Most food [but not sweets, soft drink, alcohol or hot food to take away] is zero rated as is public transport, books, newspapers and magazines, new housing, children's clothing and shoes and many other things.

There is also a lower rate of 5% on domestic fuel [coal logs gas electricity], Sanpro and again some other things that I have forgotten about!

Anyone dealing in these "taxable" items is required to apply for registration if turnover exceeds a set amount [about £64000] and can then set off against the VAT on sales any VAT paid on expenses so as to pay the net amount.

In addition there are "exempt supplies" such as insurance, most bank charges and so on. these people cannot register for those items and so cannot reclaim VAT charged.

fairyyy
17.5% =]

Check it up on here to make sure I was correct:
