Lauren M | What qualification is required to prepare people's taxes? |
Does it require certification, accounting degree, CPA, or what? |

In California, Oregon and Maryland you have to have a minimal amount of education (pass a test after a 60 hour class in California, my state) and a state license. Competence is not a requirement elsewhere but is desirable. You should at least pass the H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt basic tax class or something similar before you inflict yourself ont he public. |

If you are looking at getting into the tax preparation business, I would personally suggest taking the IRS' Enrolled Agent exam. After passing the exam, you will be able to represent clients before the IRS just like attorneys and CPAs. Check out the following for more information:

Unbelievably, absolutely nothing in most jurisdictions. I can prepare your taxes for you if you want, and even charge a fee.
I cannot claim or advertise any sort of accounting designation, of course, but if someone is foolish enough to hire me without those, I'm good to go.

Believe it or not, none. The preparer, if not the taxpayer, must sign the bottom of the return. Be sure to ask the person doing your taxes for some proof of competence. |

Nothing is required most states, although they're moving that way
Jackson Hewitt and Block offer tax classes, starting this month, 16 weeks of instruction, followed by tests, and then you're a certified tax preparer if you pass. Hewitt charges only for book, Block charges for book and class, and both may hire you if you complete course. No specific education requirements for those taking class, except ability to read, willingness to do homework, attend class.
J-H was founded by people who left Block because they wanted to computerize and standardize tax returns and Block wouldn't. They had first computer tax software. Liberty was founded by Hewitt who left Jackson Hewitt and requires all Liberty locations to hire those Statue of Liberty 'wavers". |

Federally, none.
But be careful. Some states (California springs to mind, but there are others) require some certification or training. |

Anyone can do taxes. You do not have to have a license. There is a line towards the end of the forms that asks for the persons name who prepared the taxes....and thats about it....good luck. |

None what-so-ever unless you live in CA or OR or a city or county with local requirements. Our lovely federal government feels that anybody should be allowed to do taxes. In most states I need a license to cut your hair or paint your toenails, but not to do your taxes.
That is why you need to be careful where you go and who you use.
Most preparers at H&R Block and the other national chains have never been to college or even taken an accounting class. They are almost all trained internally, starting with the classes that are starting right about now. Liberty's is free and so is Jackson-Hewitt's if you live in certain areas, and both of those classes are worth what you pay - nothing. H&R Block's is better and is probably the best way to get started in the field if that is what you want to do. They charge about $100 usually. |
