Chara Pointshot | What should I expect when I go to H&R Block today? |
I have never gotten my taxes done there before, but I want an accurate return this year. What do they charge? How long will I need to wait for my return? |

Kind, thoughtful, compassionate people...after all, you're helping pay someone's salary there!
Why not get all necessary forms and do them yourself? It's fun! I always did three sets, then chose the best one! |

Expect to be taken advantage of. Use Turbo Tax or one of the other online tax preps, cheaper and just as reliable. Very easy to use. |

i work for h and r block in south carolina.
i understand that you can do your taxes cheaper and is all up to you but we are a great company. we offer so much to people. i am tired of hearing all the bad reps for what charging for a service that if you could do yourself you would do it on line. why else would you come see a tax proffessional. we try our best and want to help everyone. no you are not obligated to pay for tax preperation if you are not satisfied. just one more way of looking out for people. we do not "push" rapid refund. and our bank fees are among the lowest out there. people find out what the cost of everything is and decide for yourselfs.
did you know we offer a free savings account and debit card to people so that if you dont have a bank you dont have to pay a check cashing fee.
also we offer an ira that you can open up right in office.
plus alot more.
give us a chance we are not the bad guys. |

People put HRBlock down but they are very good. They have newer preparers and more experienced ones. They can match you up with someone that has your level of need. You can call ahead and make an appointment so you do not have a long wait. There is a charge yes. It depends on how complicated your taxes are. They will do them and if you dont like it you can leave and not pay anything (without the prepared taxes also). If they do your taxes they have 2 guarantees. The standard guarantee is if they screw up they pay the penalties and interest. They have an extended guarantee for $30 that will incude up to $5000 in taxes paid also if they mess up. Plus they will represent you with the IRS if needed. If you do not have a bank account you can get an Emerald card and have your tax return put on it and your employer can do direct deposit on it also. If you want to pay and have them efile no problem. They are not going to try and sell you on the instant refunds. You can start a savings account or an IRA there if you want to but it is not pushed. If you are low income and open an IRA you can get the savers credit. |

You will probably have to wait in line a few hours to get taxes filled out. But you can have your check back in 24 hrs if you choose or it can take six weeks. They will leave the chose up to you. The charges vary so you have to ask them. But they do great work and will go with you if you get audit ted. |

I used to go to H&R block, but I stopped due to there high fees and agents who really don't know what there doing.
I suggest you try doing your taxes online thru H&R Block. Listen, doing taxes online is much easier than you think.
Try it out. You really have nothing to loose. You pay only if you submit your taxes. Also, you get your refund in about 10 days or two weeks.
Since I stopped going to H&R Block, I've been doing my taxes online and saving about $200-$300.
Good Luck. |

This link (http://www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2006/mar/mar15a_06.html) gives you a little news about the inner workings of H&R Block and most other "fast tax chains". The attorney generals in every state should police ALL "fast tax" chains the way NY has done.
While there may be some good tax preparers and some offices which operate more conscientiously than others, H&R Block has overall EARNED their reputation. Worse, it's been at the exploitation and on the backs of the poorest of our citizens, taking huge fees rather than counseling people that a simple savings account is all that is needed to get a direct deposit in 7 - 10 days.
Keep your money. If you do go and stand in line, you can check the return they prepare for you on my website: www.TaxEfilers.com. No fees until you decide to print or efile it.
Good luck! |

I have always had a good experience with H R block and the waiting time wasn't that bad but they are high I have decided to do my taxes online this year and save 300 plus when you go they will offer your refund early and it will look good so you would
do and before you know it that is about 700 bucks you spend or atleast that how it works for me but I get a pretty big refund each year |

You don't have to go to H&R Block to do your taxes. There are several online tax prep software that are free or cheap and easy to use.
However, if you do go, bring all documents such as, Driver's License, SS card ( of you, and your dependents), w-2's, 1099, 1098 ...
From my experience they can't tell you how much it'll cost to prepare your taxes until they are done. But if your not happy with the cost, you can just tell em to buzz off. They don't charge you by the hour.
The wait will vary with how busy they are and how many tax pros are working in the office. |

Expect to be upsold to the insane rapid filing where you leave with a portion of what you are entitled to. Please pass on that. I am sure they will say it "ONLY COSTS..." but look at that as a percentage of your refund and as your money. Before you go, figure out your own taxes and see at the end if they have found you deductions that are worth paying for. The odds are tax software will find the same deductions if you are entitled to them. |
