What state do I need to file in for my income tax returns?
I am active duty military. I just recently moved to PA from VA six months ago. I never changed my tax information from when I was living in VA since that was my home of residence. I don't plan on changing it either, however, now that taxes are back I need to know what state I claim. Thanks in advance!

Your domicile is VA. That does not change due to a PCS move. You only file in VA unless you had off-duty income in PA.

If you did have off-duty income in PA, only that income is reported on the PA return. You report it on the VA return as well, but VA will allow you a credit for the PA taxes paid.

Edit: Any time, Soldier. Happy to help!

The military works a little differently than other "jobs". If you are stationed in PA but VA is your legal residence, then you file your state taxes in VA.

Check with a military tax advisor to make sure. They offer this advice for free.

you can go into records and ask that question based on the law of the state your in. You being in the military can file in either. Both have personnel income tax, and at military pay you most likely will not have a problem, so I would use your Home of Record, it should be your voting state my wife said. both Rte. military people.

good Luck and thanks for giving us or Freedom.

You should probably claim in the state where you filed, where your home is. If you're unsure though, talk to a tax advisor.

lee
you will need to file in every state that you worked.

Jss
It does not matter if you change your tax info or not.
When you are in PA, any income during that period must be reported to PA.
If you are resident of VA, then you must report worldwide income for the year (inclusing PA income) on VA tax return. You will claim credit for taxes paid to PA.

Read about taxes for two states: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/06/working-in-two-or-more-states.html

You need to file in both states if you had income in both.
