~ Lace ~ | What to do if I know someone cheated badly on their taxes to get a bigger return? |
I know these two people one of which is paid under the counter and so therefore is not entitled to any kind of tax return but somehow managed to come up with something to be able to get a tax return. His wife only made like 200 dollars for the year of 2006, but they got a tax return check for over four thousand dollars. They wrote off daycare costs when their kid wasn't even in daycare, and they also wrote off other things that I know they shouldn't have. Should I do something about this because I know they shouldn't have gotten back what they did and I know they cheated on their taxes. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THIS SITUATION?? Additional Details TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAID TO MIND MY OWN BUSINESS SO THAT IT DOESN'T COME BACK TO BITE ME IN THE BUTT, I AM A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, AND EARN MY MONEY THE HONEST WAY AND DO NOT BELIEVE IN LYING, STEALING, OR CHEATING. THESE PEOPLE ARE THE TYPE OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE OFF OF WELFARE AND TRY TO CHEAT THEIR WAY THROUGH EVERYTHING. I AGREE WITH THE ONE PERSON WHO SAYS IT IS MY CIVILIAN DUTY TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND I THINK THAT IS WHAT I AM GOING TO DO, I DO HAVE PROOF BECAUSE SHE SHOWED ME AND I ALSO ASKED TO SEE HER PAPER WORK FROM WHERE SHE FILED HER TAXES BECAUSE SHE ASKED ME FOR ADVICE, PLUS ON TOP OF THAT SHE WAS TELLING ME WAYS TO CHEAT THE GOVERNMENT AND WHEN I SAID I DIDN'T WANT TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT SHE SAID " WELL WE DID AND WE DIDN'T GET CAUGHT" IT IS PEOPLE LIKE THAT, THAT MAKE ME SICK TO MY STOMACH |

It is your moral and civic duty to report them. Get the facts and do it properly.
And as stated above, you are entitled to a reward of a nice percentage of everything recovered by the IRS. It is their incentive to have people do the right thing. It's a shame they have to offer one, but given the number of folks who said you should MYOB, I see why. |

Notify the IRS and get an anonymous number from them. When they recover from the deadbeats, you will get a reward. I don't know what the current rate it.
If you don't report them, you and I will be paying for their share of the national debt. |

If they got that amount back, they must have gotten the earned income credit, which means they DID claim at least some of the under-the-table income. The IRS has started to look very closely at earned income credits on returns, since this is known to be an area where a lot of tax fraud takes place. And once they start looking, they might well notice that the mom didn't have enough income to have been working much, so day care costs would not be something they could take a credit for either.
What would I do? I'd probably just leave it alone, and hope strongly that the IRS catches up to them real soon. But if you want to report them to the IRS and are sure of your facts, you can do so, and it would not be out of line. Realize that what someone tells you and what they really did or got might not totally match. By their own admission, they're not honest people. |

I'm constantly amazed at how often this question is asked and how many people condone breaking the law, by saying you need to mind your business.
In their defense though you may have suspicions or they may have told you something that may not be true.
If you do not have direct knowledge of their cheating you probably do not have grounds to report them to the IRS. |

They will get busted on their own. You just can't put numbers on a piece of paper without any paperwork to back it up. When the IRS checks it it is going to get flagged because they won't have childcare receipts. Even if they e-filed and got their refund already, the actual return goes through someone, so unless they get someone who is a total dumba$$ they won't get away with it.
UHHHH....IF YOU KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO BUST THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE WHY DID YOU BOTHER TO COME HERE AND ASK WHAT WOULD WE DO???? |
