6th Finger | What would happen if federal taxes to the Government became voluntary like tithing in Church? |

If the government became a church, then it might just keep its head above water financially. However I firmly believe that we would have a far greater number of folks that want to enjoy the service but not pay anything for the privilege. Can you imagine being at home and finding the government appearing at you door with a collection plate to meet a special need? It would be a constant thing. |

The country would fall apart. Literally. There would be no money for road construction, school construction and renovations, and much more. |

Theoretically, Americans wouldn't tax because they want their own money... In my opinion, the government would probably still spend money without tax income from its population, and eventually drive itself into an impossible debt until another country attacked our country due to its poor infrastructure. Taxes are extremely important. |

The government would stop collecting taxes and live on gifts. Taxes are not voluntary. No taxes. Imposed by no government. |

Then they would have to fix their own roads. Pay for schools, etc. I think it is cheaper to pay taxes. |

The government would run out of money, and we would be annexed by a country that had the military and/or financial means to take us over. What would happen to tithing if you couldn't deduct it from your taxable income? A fair percentage of the population is both short-sighted and greedy. You can't run a country on voluntary contributions. |

Very few would pay and the government would run out of money. On the bright side, the war would end, because there would not be enough money to pay the troops. On the downside, approximately 1/3 of the country would lose their jobs, because the federal government, its contractors and suppliers, their subcontractors and suppliers, etc., would layoff nearly all their employees, and the companies that provide furniture, electricity, copy machines, etc., to these companies would also lose business and have to layoff many of their employees. |

Legend in your own mind!
At one time it was voluntary, but few people actually paid. If it happened now we would cease to be a nation.
Just what is tithing? |

Steve B
That literally cannot happen. Payment of taxes is mandatory That's what makes them taxes and not charitable contributions. Voluntary contributions are not taxes. The federal government could, however, repeal all taxes and try to operate on contributions, with the results described by others. |
