What would trigger a tax audit by the state or irs?
is it random?

Probably a drastic change in what you claim, or if you have the exact same for several years?

The IRS uses a computerized scoring system which it uses to select taxpayers for potential audits. The exact details of the system is secret.

The system weights more heavily certain factors which the IRS has found to historically be the source of audit adjustments. The more such factors a return contains, the higher the chances for audit of that return.

Claiming the max on charity contributions is a trigger and also claiming a home office. I was told the random picks were around January and February and the closer it got to April 15, much less.

Sometimes it's random. Usually something on your return looks out of line with the rest of the info.

There are multiple levels of audits.

If you have an unusually high write off, you may get a letter asking for copies of your receipts and other proof that you actually spent the money. If you can send those in immediately, the audit could be over with in days.

If you have odd items on your return that magically add up to a big refund, you could be asked for a lot more information and your refund could be delayed by months.

For example, in 2006, taxpayers often asked for a telephone tax refund that were outrageous. Eg, to be eligible for that size of refund, they had to have spent 150% of their income on phone calls during the previous 3 years.... You can bet those got questioned.

Chris
umm how about spending more than u make a year would cause them to audit you. or if u claim bankrupt then they do too

Requesting a replacement business license because the one you have is faded beyond reading. This really happened to a friend of mine. The next week, she had the state in her office.

If you have a lot of money going threw your accounts the government may see that as a red flag but for the most it is ramdon

i LoVe My FiaNCe!!!
like claiming things.. ripping off the government... basically when you do your taxes don't lie... and you won't get audited...

P.S. go look at my reference web site.... it might help you...
