Well, you pay no state income tax.
Since states have to squeeze the money out of you one way or another, however, such states tend to have high taxes elsewhere, such as sales taxes or property taxes. |

Enormous! You sleep a whole lot better. In a few states such as Virginia, the brain dead bureaurats go over every single income tax that is filed. They insist you are wrong when they are wrong upwards of 80% of the time. The state income tax forms are easy to fill out. When you complain to your Senator or Delegate, you get their secretary and she said "are you kidding? Mrs. .... is a wonderful employee. We've had no bad reports about her". Usually taxpayers just pay the extra tax without bothering to take the commonwealth to court. It's hard to fight city hall.
When the IRS says you owe more income tax, 4-9 months later, Virginia begins to send harassing letters that you owe more tax. There are no end to problems in the States that have income tax. If you live in one state and work in another state that has income tax, money is withheld from you and you have to prorate your income. If you are married and your spouse works, the state wants more income piled on to prorate! It is harassment. Some states have arrangements with other states and you can get the income withheld from your paycheck back. Other than that, you will pay income tax to a state to whom you do not owe! |

Usually there is no benefit, Yes, you don't pay state income tax, but most of those states have "use" taxes such as higher gas taxes and sales taxes. Sorry, no free lunch. |

It certainly makes things simpler at tax preparation time. Especially good for me because I'm serving as a VITA tax volunteer this year.
Typically, states with no income tax charge high amounts for other taxes. But...let me give an example. I live in Washington state, which has no state income tax but a sales tax of slightly less than 9% (varies by location). Next door in Oregon, they have no sales tax but a high income tax. In most years Washingtonians might pay $800-1000 or so extra in sales taxes but on income of $50,000 they'll save at least three times that amount in income taxes compared to folks on the other side of the border. Unless you're buying a car or something like that every year, but in that case you'd probably have income closer to $100,000 with correspondingly higher income tax. (The way to have it both ways would be to live and work in Washington, but right near the Oregon border so that you could easily cross the border to shop.)
I recall that about a decade ago Money magazine published a total individual tax summary (including income, property, and sales taxes and maybe other taxes as well) for all 50 states. The top nine positions (in lowest overall individual state taxes paid) were held by the nine states with no income tax. States with the highest individual income tax rates such as Oregon and New York all wound up at or near the bottom of the rankings. |

No return to file and with things like sales tax you can choose not to buy things so during working years while saving for retirement it can be a good thing. |
