The worst that can happen is you end up in Federal Court in front of a judge and get sentenced to several years in prison. However, they would have to have proof that you did it with the intent to defraud the government.
More likely what would happen is that they will audit you and give you the option to treat it as an "honest mistake". They will then require you to pay the back taxes, interest and penalties. This may be several thousand dollars depending on what exactly you did.
Also, you may not have "gotten away with it". They can and do go back several years in audits. So if you did this last year don't be surprised if they catch up to you in the next year or so. |

The worst? Prison for tax fraud. It's more likely though that you'd face fines and other monetary penalties.
MAYBE you've gotten away with it once already. Or maybe the IRS just hasn't gotten to you yet. |

In about 12-18 months after you file, you will get a letter. The letter will ask you for copies of your tuition expenses because the IRS has no record of your school reporting that you actually paid any.
When you can't produce those records because you weren't in school, the IRS will redo your tax return, will ask you to pay back the excess refund and will had penalties and interest (roughly 14% per year) to the total.
The IRS will then ask you to pay the money back. You can pay, pay via an installment agreement or let them take collection actions against you (including taking your bank account and garnishing your wages). They generally don't take you to court.... |

If they cathc you , and you can't pay them back, you could go to jail for tax fraud. They could also just take your refunds for the next few years until you have paid them back. Don't you think that our society has enough freeloaders??? Why would you be one? |

the worst that can happen? You can go to jail for life for tax evasion. While in jail, unspeakable things happen to you. You only want to get out of there, and finally, you snap. And then you die. |

What about not reporting income. I had 3 jobs this year. What if I only report income from one of them? |

It's too easy to get caught, but not paying taxes is only "freeloading" if our government's trying to run the world is somehow a service to all of us. |
