When I filled out my 2007 tax return, I forgot to include the info about my student loans. What do I do?
When I filled out my tax returns this year, I had not even received the info from my student loans about including it. I totally forgot to even put it in the equation when filling out the turbotax forms. Will I get in a lot of trouble? I've already gotten my money back for my taxes also. I'm 23 (I know, it's no real excuse) but this was the first time that I've ever done my taxes (my parents have always had them done.) I'm sure that the IRS doesn't care about any of that... but I'm really worried now because I just got stuff in the mail from my loan place with the forms for preparing my taxes. Thanks for any advice you can give!

Student loan proceeds that you receive have no tax consequences and are not reported on your tax return.

If you paid interest on student loans they are deductible as an above-the-line adjustment. If you paid interest on a student loan you may be eligible for an additional refund if you had any tax liability last year. You'll have to file an amended return on Form 1040-X to claim that.

You are NOT in any trouble for not claiming the interest paid and since loan proceeds are not reported you're not in "trouble" for not reporting that either simply because it's not reported.

I <3 My Hamster Smokey!
File an ammended return. The IRS has the forms or you can get it online.

you can file an amendment, go to the irs website and do it on your own or use hrblock or turbotax and it will explain to you how to do it. if you're claiming the interest you paid on your loans than you will be getting more money back from the government after you add that on.

If you made a mistake on your return, file an amended return (Form 1040X). See www.irs.gov for instructions.

You need to file an amended return and if it's anything like ours was (we have college freshman) claiming the education credits will be worth it.

No,you'll be OK if you refile before April 15th. Fix it now! Get you an amended 1040X and refile it. If you've alredy gotten your return refund, and you get less back according to your amended return, or if you owe more than you've already paid, send the difference with your amended return.

File an amended return on Form 1040X to correct the error or omission. If you did underpay or receive too much of a refund, you have to make up the difference and possibly pay interest or a small penalty, but if you mail the amended return on Form 1040X and the money by April 15, you should be ok.

Make notes about those figures and report them next year.
