jakdie999 | When do I pay this income tax? ? |
I worked as an independent contractor in NYC and made roughly $1500. ( Business related expenses totaled more than $1500. ) I quit the job and will relocate out of state for a full-time, salaried position.
When should I file for the $1500 I made? Do I file by Sept. 15th or by April 15th with the taxes from my new job? I made no profit out of this and would like to know the exact deadline of this tax filing. ( if required )

If you made it this year, file the income and expenses on Sch C, on your 1040, by April 15.
Your NYC employer should mail you a 1099 at the end of the year (if he has the right address). You don't really need that piece of paper, as long as you know the right numbers. |

This is contingent on what type of business you were. In all likelihood you are a Schedule SE filer, but only a competent tax advisor will know for sure. As a self-employed business, you are required to file by your tax filing deadline, which is usually the same date as your personal tax filing deadline, unless you're incorporated. This is typically April 15th of the year following the year in which you had earned income. The earned income from your new job that you make in the same tax year will likely be W-2 wages and you will file them on a different form with the IRS. Ultimately, you should come out with a loss on your business venture, and usually you can use this to reduce your earned income for the tax year in question. |

You file your tax return by April 15 of the year following the income. If you had no income, you can credit the loss against what you make from your salaried job as long as you have made a profit within the last 3 years. If this is your 3rd year of a loss, the IRS will consider it a hobby rather than a business and you will have to pay back taxes. You do no make enough to be required to pay estimated taxes.
You should have your taxes prepared by a professional to make sure you do it right. |

You'll file it when you file your 2008 tax return in April of 2009. Be sure you file as a part-year resident of NYS at the time, since New York is very diligent at finding taxes due to the jurisdiction.
And yes, even though your expenses exceeded revenues, you still have to file. But in most cases, the tax loss will be able to offset part of your earned income from your job. |

Since you had to net income from the contractor job, just report the income and expenses when you file your return early in 2009, by April 15. |

Your tax return is due on April 15th. Since this was a zero profit gig, no estimated tax payments are due. |

I think your best bet would be to call a tax professional to be sure. I know there are different rules for self employed people. By the way I reported your_ma_was_here for insulting you. It isn't allowed on this site! |

I believe it is April 15th |

This was personal income, so you would need to file in April 15th with your other personal tax information. Also, because no profit was made, you shouldn't have to declare it at all. Check with a tax professional to be sure ( Not enough info about your personal tax status given) |
