When does the irs start coming after you for non payment of you taxes?

Once they mail a "FINAL DEMAND" letter, it is open season on you 30 days later. They are required to send it to the last known address. So if you haven't filed, it goes to the last address they have on a 1040.
You could get a levy on your wages or accounts any time after the 30 days expires.

Be proactive and confront the problem. Waiting just makes it worse.

When they find out about you. Sometimes they know right away, sometimes they don't for a few years.

By "Coming after you", they start with just letters.

Whenever they want to. AVOID this event. Pay them what you owe ASAP, and if you can't, get on a payment plan. Once the IRS are on your case, they never give up, they may not be fast but they are relentless.

Depends on a lot of details not given.

How much do you owe? If you owe a lot, expect a response faster than if you owe a little.

Where do you live? Some areas are more backed up, with limited personnel, to pursue cases.

What type of taxes do you owe? The IRS will probably go after you faster if you owe business taxes (941, etc) than if you owe personal taxes.

But a typical time frame is two years. But don't count on it.

FYI, Pub 594 (you can find it on IRS.gov) will outline the collection process. Typically, you get two to four letters before it is assigned to "automatic collection" which will try to resolve the tax matter by phone. If they cannot reach you, or don't have your number, it goes into a waiting line to be assigned to a revenue officer, who may send a letter, try to call, or visit you. That, I assume, is what you mean by "coming after you."

It could be as soon as the next year or five to ten years from now. It all depends. I say go to them before they come to you. Regardless you will have to pay lots of fees and interest. Good luck!!

Whenever it is convenient for them. Usually it is sometime in the following year, but could take longer. You can run, but you can't hide from the IRS.

You need to define "coming after you." In a tax debt collection context, you will get a bill for unpaid tax about six weeks after a return is filed with follow-up bills over the next several weeks. Penalties and interest continue to accrue if you don't pay. After that wages and bank accounts can be levied upon from a distance. Big and ugly accounts are assigned to employees in a local IRS office.

A series of notices is sent out culimating in the CP504, which informs you of the intent of the IRS to potentially file a tax lien and claim any state income tax due you. This is usually a few months after the debt is assessed. If you do not respond to the CP504 your account will usually go to the Automated Collection System where liens and levies are issued. (If you owe a LOT of money your case may be assigned to a Revenue Officer, but we're talking big bucks here). First, you will receive a final notice of intent to levy. Now that much of the enforced collection is automated, levies are issued quicker than before.

Your best bet is to call immediately and make payment arrangements.

Whenever they find out about it. It could be from filing income taxes, or they could just stumble upon your file. Usually I don't think they waste resources on small claims, but if you've got a major tax incursion (several thousand or tens of thousands owed) they'll hunt you down for an audit.
