When filing taxes do I add my husbands SS benfits in with my wages?
It would definately bump up my Earned Income Credit? I know none of its taxable but wasnt sure if I could add it as income or not?

Social security benefits are reported on line 20a of Form 1040. Follow the simple worksheet on the bottom of the SSA1099 to determine if any of your husband's benefits are taxable and enter that amount on line 20b.

Rules for determining the taxable amount Social Security benefits are on page 24, of the instructions for form 1040:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf

See page 46 for rules to determine Earned Income. Generally earned income is the amount reported on line 7 of form 1040 (minus a few subtractions for some filers)

Social Security benefits are not included as earned income when figuring EIC.

Uh, no, ss is not earned income so won't increase EIC, although it could decrease it. And ss can be partially taxable depending on your total income jointly.

Craig T
SS benefits are not EARNED income, therefore they DO NOT count towards EIC.

there is a SSA form that you file out for social security benefits

Wayne Z
Do not try doing a return with SS benefits by hand! Period!

Some of it may be taxable but it is never all taxable.

Do it online, with software or take it a professional.

Actually his SS benefits can LOWER your EIC.

Follow the worksheets to see if any of the SS benefits are taxable. If this changes your AGI, you will look up the EIC twice, one on your earned income and once on the AGI. Whichever amount is LOWER is the one you get.

Doctor Deth
Social Security benefits usually ARE taxable, so you better know what you are doing with your tax return
