its amazing how many people dont know this, There are NO penalties for filing late when you are due a refund, NONE. ;-) you have until April 15, 2009 to file and that isnt a joke, its for real, if you are due a refund. |

Doesn't matter if you owe money or are getting money back, your tax return itself is due by April 15. However, you can file for an extension of time to file that will give you another few months. The extension itself is also due by April 15th. If you owe money, the money is still due by the 15th, but your tax return itself wouldn't be due until August 15th. If you don't file your tax return or file an extension by April 15th, the IRS can charge you a penalty for not filing your tax return, even if you don't owe any money. |

As you have heard the deadline is the 15th usually and the 17th this year because the 15th is on Saturday.
Technically if you do not file by the due date the IRS can penalize you for failure to file. The best way to avoid the penalty is file on time or extend your tax return.
In reality the IRS is not likely to penalize you for failure to file if they owe you. That said then the longest you could possibly wait to file your taxes and receive a refund is three years.
My recommendation would be to file an extension. The process is easy and can actually be done by making a phone call to the IRS extension number or by filing the appropriate form. If you file the paper extension some states accept that as their extension as well but others due not and require a separate form. |

Actually its the 17th. The IRS will track you down and get you like al capone if you don't file on time. Actually I'm sure its not that big a deal... |

April 15th is the deadline to file, or else they will penalize you (for filing late, but you can get an extension)even if you do not owe any taxes, if you do not mind paying penalties then you have three years, but why would you want to wait for your money? file your return and then go shopping! |

April 15, whether you owe or not. As of right now, according to my accountant, the gov't owes me close to $1K, so I'm definately in the black, yet my paperwork all has to be postmarked before/on the 15th. |
