Actually, you could file before January 16th. You can file a return as soon as you have all of your income and deduction items on hand. This means that you could have filed as early as in December of 2006 if your last paycheck was received before the end of the year and you incurr no additional items that are to be offset against your income.
However, the tax return forms (such as IRS-1040) are available in late December of 2006, the actual release date varies year to year. You can file as soon as the form comes out. |

You can, but you shouldn't. The estimated refund could be wrong and then you will have to fix it. You won't be able to e-file and it won't be saving you any time. If you get a refund anticipation loan for the estimated amount and it is wrong, you may end up paying more in the long run.
Make sure that you get the full benefit of your refund by staying far away from H & R Block or one of those other commercial places. The IRS has a program called VITA that does free tax preparation for households earning $40,000 or less. They can make sure that you get all your eligible credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, the Dependent Care Credit, etc.
This is an absolutely FREE service. They can e-file and do direct deposit so that you can get your return back in 7-10 days. There is no need to get a refund anticipation loan, which is really nothing more than a high interest loan where you would be paying to borrow your own money. You have worked hard for your money and you should be able to keep it! To find a VITA free tax site near you, call the IRS at: 1-800-829-1040. |

Well this year they have (chase) has this new policy that the place that prepares your taxes you can get a advance loan of 1000.00 starting on yesterday and they file the rest on the 12th. Try H&R Block or if there is a Jackson Hewitt in your city/state. |

To file by mail, you need your W-2, and can send in the forms as soon as you have that.
The IRS website says they will start accepting electronic filings as of January 12 if I remember right, although I can't find it any more on their website.
Several companies offer to "file" your return before that, and give you an instant refund. What they're really doing is giving you a very expensive short-term loan on your refund money. Only do that if you really have to - it'll cost you a lot. |

Today is OK but some tax software is not ready with all state forms. Some professional preparers are waiting on that. If you can find all forms yourself then go ahead. |
