Starr | When married and filing taxes, what is the difference between filling married but seperate or filing injured? |
My husband and I got married in August, that's less than six months before tax time. because we got married so late in the year should we file married but separate or married and jointly? Or does it really make a difference? |

It is usually better to file joint. Separate is a higher tax rate and you lose some deductions. Injured is when your spouse owes money for something and you want to get part of your refund. If you have to do injured spouse then you might want to do separate instead. It really depends on how much is owed. If it isnt a lot let them take the refund and get it paid off. You can do it both ways and see which is best. Doing injured spouse there is no guarantee how much you get. If you are in a community property state you must add both incomes together and divide by 2 for total wages. |

It depends on how much money EACH of you made. SOMETIMES you can get more back, by filing separately; Figure it both ways, and see which is best . |

If you get married on the 31st of December at one minute before midnight you are considered married for the entire year by the IRS. Married filing joing gives you your best filing for the bucks; married filing seperate means you don't get EIC or other credits and yada. If one or the other owes for something that takes the refund simply include a form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) with your filed return that protects the other spouse's refund from being touched. |

It doesn't matter when during the year you got married.
Filing as married filing separately, you'll pay more total tax between you, but if one of you owes money on that return, the other wouldn't be liable for it. |

Injured spouse (form 8379) comes into play if you file jointly, one of you has a premarital debt (tax, child support, student loan) and the other would prefer to get some money back rather than paying the debt.
If you file separately, the form isn't needed and since it's not used, doesn't add time to the processing. |

You can file as married filing jointly (MFJ) or married filing separately. In most cases, it is better to file as MFJ. Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/filing-status-for-married.html |

absolutely it makes a difference. You should always file married filing joint. Your standard deduction is much higher.
Remember, your filing status is determined on your martial status on December 31. You can get married or have a baby and it will still count as if it was for the whole year. |

no difference what so ever. You can file jointly if you wish. Just figure out what is best for you this year |
