When starting work for the first time, do you pay tax straight away or after you have earened so much?

As you have asked this question on the UK site, I am answering for this country. The British tax year goes from 6th April to 5th April, and you are currently allowed to earn £6035 per annum before paying tax. It is proportioned out throughout the tax year, up to 5th October, you could earn £3017 before tax would be deducted.
This is your first job, so when employer asks you to sign form P45 to say that this job is your only or main one, also make sure the box that asks if this is your only employment/you were previously in full-time education is ticked. Your employer should put you on a cumulative code, so that you can utilise your backlog of unused tax allowances. Thus it should be some while before you start paying tax.
Just to correct, you are not exempt from paying tax at any age, if your income is over £6035.

I agree with Steffi although signing a P45 is incorrect, (just typing error I suspect), it would actually be a P46: Employee without a Form P45

straight away. though it will depend on your salary.
to prevent more problems in the future, start paying from your first check.

Taxes come out of your pay automatically. Your pay stub will show the deductions. That is, unless you are getting paid cash under the table (which is not legal).

It depends on how old you are......if you're 15 and under you do not pay tax.....if your 16 or older it will be taken off every pay check commencing with your first check.

It all depends how much you earn. If you earn enough to be taxed, this tax will be taken out of your pay each month.

My two cents

they can't take out what you dont work. Its when you start working that they take out. Like if you work one hour and quit. Yep its going to be taxed.

You start paying Basic Rate tax immediately, make sure however that your employer's pay department move you on to the correct code after three months.
