Yes this is standard practice for many households.

You can file "Married-Filing Separately".

However, neither of you can file as "Single" or "Head of Household".

If most of that large refund is from Earned Income Credit, you can probably say goodbye to that. Married-Filing Separate returns do not qualify for Earned Income Credit and you would have to add both of your incomes together if you file a Joint return.

You can each file as married filing separately. But there are a number of credits you aren't eligible for that way, and EIC is one of them. It is only in very rare situations that you pay less tax or get more back by filing separately.

travelguruette
You can file married filing separately. However, all that $6500 you thought you would get back will probably go down the drain in unallowed child deductions. You lose most deductions by filing separately.

red eggle
yes it is possible

kixfan
Yes you can but your deduction will be much less than filing joint.

I am pretty sure that you can file separately, but you can't both claim the children. There is an option on the papers of "Married filing Separately" but you should check with an accountant to be 100% sure of how this works.

Hope this helps!

woahman!
My mom and step dad do.
Yes, yes you can!

I highly suggest it, in case there are any exes who want to try and get your tax money.

Bob F
Yes, you can file separately but there are a lot of deductions and credits that you cannot get if you file separately. If you are used to getting refunds in the $6500 range, you must be getting the maximum Earned Income Tax Credit, which is one of those credits you will not get if you file separately.
