Skyler | When will the National Debt be paid off? |
|

Never. It's over 9 trillion dollars. The national debt has been with us for... decades and as long as it's not a national priority (politicians tend to look at the number as a % of GNP), then it will never happen. |

It won't. It could be if we held all of the Nations who owe us money would pay. But we use that a barganing chip when we want them to do what we want. And we also use it against their natural resources for our benefit. |

Not in our lifetime. Unless there are major changes to the way our government operates, never. Even with radical changes to our government, no one alive today will live to see the full amount paid. |

Okay, I don't know when the debt will be zero, but in order to dispel some mythology about the national debt...
The national debt is bad, but it is not as bad as it sounds. In order to pay off the national debt all we have to do is cut back on the rate of spending growth.
The government doesn't have to cut current spending levels, it just has to limit the amount of spending growth. Most people have no idea what they are talking about on this point.

I agree with everyone else, never. Based on credit worthieness, however, we still control most of the world's money. Think of the United States holding the credit card to with the highest credit limit in the world. What makes this particularly dangerous is that we may be getting to the point where our credit limits are starting to fall. |

i really don't think it will ever be paid off, unless they stop wasting money sending poeple to the moon and Mars. |
