When you are married, do you get more or less taxes taken out?

Depends on what you file.

When I was single I filed SINGLE. When i got married I file MARRIED BUT WITHOLDING AT THE SINGLE RATE. They take out about the same.

Check with the IRS website. My experiance is that they take less out of your check but at the end of the year you wind up taking a hit and paying more in taxes!

It's called the marriage penalty tax for a reason...Your single tax obligation might be 15% so might your husbands, but when you combine your incomes at the end of the year you get shoved into a tax bracket that is higher.

If you update your W-4, you'll have less taxes taken out. Otherwise, you'll get a larger refund when you file your 1040. See the tables in the link below beginning on page 37.

I am a victim of the marriage penalty!

I lose a couple thou a year because I am married and it stinks. When I first got married, I did them as if we were both still single and we would've made out better. I have to claim married 0 (even though I have 1 kid now) to even get close to the right amount taken out.
