When you but a a second hand car from a dealer, why do they add vat to the price when?
vat has already been paid on the car when it was new?
and if the same /other dealers sells the the same car again and again ,vat is still charged
RIP OFF Britain !
it seems to me the buyer of the car is the loser everytime to the Tax man!
or am i missing the point?
Additional Details
my mate bough a second hand car from a big dealer in the uk and on the the invoice he was charged £1879 vat.

You are not supposed to pay VAT on second hand goods. You are quite right in saying that VAT was already paid when the vehicle was new. What this grubby thieving second hand car dealer [trust me I'm a second hand car dealer] is doing, is pocketing the extra wonga he has charged you in the form of a false payment of VAT. Ask him for his VAT number, this should be on the receipt and/or any letter heading.

NEVER EVER buy a car from a 2nd hand dealer. Always go to the main dealer, Ford Motors etc. You pay more, but you do get a better deal and on second handers, two years cover for parts etc. They may also throw in a couple of year's free membership of RAC. Always worth having.

Because the tax man rips everyone off all the time basically.

Sorry everyone seems to be either getting this wrong or answering part of the question.

If your dealer was charged VAT when he purchased the car, he has to charge you VAT when he sell it to you. (Assuming he is VAT registered)

If he wasn't charged VAT when he bought it (eg he bought the car second hand from someone who wasn't registered for VAT) then you won't be charged VAT on your invoice, but he will pay VAT to HMRC on his margin.

There is no rule that says you won't be charged VAT on second hand goods. Some sales of second hand goods will qualify for the margin scheme mentioned above, but not all.

VAT is chargeable when a company turnover on VAT chargeable revenue hits c£61k,
They add VAT because they have to from HMRC
you're not missing the point,
they just want to tax companies irrespective of the profit levels, VAT registgered companies can claim back the VAT they have paid and deduct it from their VAT payments but
somewhere down the line, there is usually a nonVATable business as I am at the moment or individual who gets stung

I'm afraid you're missing the point.

Well almost everyone is wrong on this!

VAT is payable on the dealers margin, it is not payable by the purchaser, and he will not supply a VAT invoice.
If it's a commercial vehicle (taxi) he will charge VAT and the registered trader can reclaim the tax paid. (But do remember the dealer paid VAT when he bought the taxi from the previous owner ((assuming he was VAT registered))).
