When you move to another state in the middle of the year, what are your state tax liabilities?
Do you owe all your state taxes to the first state, the last state you moved to, or do you owe a proportional state tax amount to ea

Proportional state tax to each

of course, in one state you are a resident, and non resident or part time in the other
the point it, your tax home is where you work, and if you moved as a permanent move, the new state will be the state you file as a resident
there are credits on taxes paid to another state for the same income

Generally, you file as a part-year resident in each state.

The next year you would file 3 tax returns:

1) One Federal 1040 reporting all your income for the year.
2) A state return for the 1st state.
3) A state return for the 2nd state.

For most people, having multiple states to file means it is time to see a professional.

You owe tax to each state for your income while you lived there - you'll file as a part year resident for each.

You owe a proportional amount to each state. It is proportioned according to how much you made while living in the state, not according to how long you lived in the state. For example, if you live in the first state from Jan. 1 to June 30 and earn $20,000 during that time and live in the second state from July 1 to Dec. 31 and earn $10,000 during that time, then:

1. You pay the first state either (a) 2/3 of what you would have paid that state if you lived there all year and earned $30,000 during that time or (b) 1/2 of what you would have paid that state if you lived there all year and earned $40,000 during that time.
2. You pay the second state either (a) 1/3 of what you would have paid that state if you lived there all year and earned $30,000 during that time or (b) 1/2 of what you would have paid that state if you lived there all year and earned $20,000 during that time.

You do not pay the same amount to each state, even though you lived in the two states for 6 months each.

Most states use method (a). NJ used to use (b); I am not sure if it still does.
