If you earned more than $600 with any one employer, they will issue you and the IRS a W2 form showing your income (I9 if you are an independent contractor). If they do not provide you with the information you can call them for it (many people feel like if they don't get a W@ or I9 they don't have to report it, but i am not sure how the IRS views that) or you can look at your bank statments from the last year - or your check book - wherever you kept record of you deposits.
There are other laws governing state filing - you would have to research that on your own.
Peace! |

If you are paid more than $600 in a year, you will receive a W02 from an employer or a form 1099 from your independent contractor . They are required to send it to you by 1/31/2007.
BTW, don't listen to "tonalc1" about the amount because he is wrong - he said it was $700. |

As a single person you have to have made over 3200 within the year to file. All you information for filing taxes is on your check stub but to completely file before February 15, 2007 you need your w-2 that cannot be mailed no later than January 30 by your employer. After Febuary 15 you can then begin to file taxes with your check stubs. |

Should You File a Tax Return?
IRS TAX TIP 2007-02
You must file a tax return if your income is above a certain level. The amount varies depending on filing status, age and the type of income you receive.
For example, a married couple under age 65 generally is not required to file until their joint income reaches $16,900. However self-employed individuals generally must file a tax return if their net income from self employment exceeds $400.
Check the “individuals” section of the IRS Web site at IRS.gov or consult the instructions for form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ for specific details that may affect your need to file a tax return with IRS this year.
Even if you do not have to file, you should file to get money back if Federal Income Tax was withheld from your pay, or you qualify for any of the following:
The best answer I can give you is don't listen to anyone when it comes to taxes except a professional not only could you get in trouble it could cost you a lot of money. go to www.irs.gov and they will answer all your questions and you know it will be the right answer, even though alot of people might know the answer the laws change ever year and from some of the other answers I've seen either they weren't informed or improperly informed |

If you do not receive a Form W-2 from the employer by early February, call the human resource or accounting department for your employer. They should send the info to you.
There's not an earnings cut off for filing your taxes. If you worked and received ANY wages, you must file a return, even if you think your calculated tax will be zero. |

your employer is requred by law to provide you with a W2, which says how much you made and how much you paid in taxes last year. regardless of what you made, you must file with the irs. you may have to pay more in, but if you made very little you will probably be getting a refund check.
once you get your w2 from your employer, id reccomend taxslayer.com to file your return. |

Whether or not you have to file is determined by how much money you made during the year.
IRS Article - Do You Need to File a Federal Income Tax ReturnTax Return?
http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96623,00.html
IOnce you get your W-2, look at the amount of federal taxable wages you earned and compare it to what it says in that article ($8,450 or more is a definite yes) and go from there.
For California, this link will take you to the Franchise Tax Board's article on whether you need to file a return:
http://www.ftb.ca.gov/individuals/fileRtn/index.html
Your employer has to have the W-2's postmarked by January 31, so you may not receive yours until the first week in February.
If you had income tax withheld, even if you don't meet the minimum earning requirements to file, you may be entitled to a refund and then should file anyway. |

If you made more than $700, you'll receive a W-2 or 1099 by the end of the month. |
