newyorktocountry | Where does the IRS get their numbers from????? |
I did my taxes on 123easytaxfiling.com and have done them on there for the past few years. This year my refund was supposed to be 3,686 which was great! I fowarded it to the IRS and it was accepted. 6 weeks later after it was only supposed to take 3 weeks they are telling me that 1,201 will be deposited into my account. WHAT????? Where is the other 2,485 dollars? Where does the IRS get these numbers from, I even paid extra to check for errors before fowarding my taxes to the IRS. Is there any way to dispute this? Im still happy that im getting some sort of a return but thats a really big difference in money. |

You should get a letter in the mail in the next week or so after your deposit goes in explaining why they took some of your refund. I don't know how much info they will give you on the phone but it's worth a shot. Good luck and I hope you figure it out. |

An error check is only as good as the information you put in. The IRS apparently believes that you have misentered some information and/or disallowed some deductions/credits. In my experience, when they change your tax return, they usually send a letter telling you what they have changed. You can also call the IRS and ask for an explanation. |

It would be really difficult to say where exactly the discrepancy is without knowing the info from your return. They could disallowed a credit, changed your filing status, there may have been a typo or transposed number on your return, a disallowed dependent.....it could have come from anywhere, or even a combination of different things. |

Either there was something wrong with your return as you filed it, or you had some debt (e.g. back taxes, child support, overdue student loan) that the rest of your refund was taken to pay.
You should get a letter telling you why your refund wasn't what you expected to get. After you see that, if you think the IRS made mistake, the letter will tell you how to dispute the change. |

Without seeing a copy of the return you filed and knowing all of your financial situation it's impossible to say where the problem lies.
The fact that it took 6 weeks to process an e-filed return is a bit of a tell. They found something wrong with your return and corrected it before issuing the refund. Whenever the IRS corrects a return they send you a letter that explains what the error was and how they arrived at the corrected figures. You should receive that letter in the next few weeks. Then you can decide if there's anything to dispute. |

Does the website guarantee that your taxes a re correct? If so, start there. Ultimately, it's on them because you used their site. Unless you entered in some wrong figures. |

Any one who pays money to you like a job, banks, or investment firms reports this info to the IRS and the Social Security Administration. You may have forgot you work somewhere which often happens. |
