The Internal Revenue Service offers free help for those who aren't of "Rockefeller" status. They also get your money back to you quickly when a refund is due to you.

turbo tax is cheap and easy. you can do it yourself and its about 50 bucks for federal and state.

It's best to do it yourself. It's not hard. Don't go to HR block or any of those tax places unless you want to get robbed.

Do your own income tax return. It's not that hard.

You will save a lot of money over the years if you learn how to do your own taxes. Go to your local IRS office and get a copy of IRS Pub 17, for free. That covers almost all individual taxpayers.

Take your last year's return as a guide, and make the necessary changes for the current year.

You can file a federal return electronically for free at several sites on the Internet as indicated in other answers. Or, just mail it in.

wow, thats exactly why im getting into the tax prep business. I hear outrageous amounts paid be people to prepare there taxes.

i wont charge that much though. i like my day job.

Absolutely free, go to IRS.GOV and follow the free file instructions. Stay away from turbotax and h&r block; they just want to get into your purse.

If your income is under around $40K for the year, look for a VITA site in your area. Trained certified volunteers will prepare your taxes at no charge.

To find a VITA site go to irs.gov and type "VITA" into the search box. You can also just watch your local paper, since they usually print the info. Or call your local library - they might know. Many VITA sites are at malls, libraries or local community centers.

Once you get your W-2s (no legal way around that) you can e-file your Federal return for free through the IRS website.

You'll have to pay a few $$$ to e-file your state return if your state levies an income tax but it will be a heck of a lot less than the storefront tax prep mills charge!

I use IRS' Free File Alliance. There are quite a few partners in the FFA that offer free e-filing of your federal return. Turbo Tax and H & R Block are two of the most popular tax services that participates in the FFA.
However, you may have to pay to file your state return. If that's the case, you can always go to your state's department of revenue and see if you can free e-file from there.
The IRS website also has a help tool if you're unsure if you would qualify for free e-filing and what tax service is available under those circumstances.

I have used H & R Blocks online tax software for many years. It walks you through the entire process and even if you own your own business it makes sure to ask you all the questions needed to find out what possible write offs you may have, etc. It does cost some, not much however & you can get protection in case you were ever audited or if there is a mistake on your taxes in any way, they will fix it for you for free.

Online. I always messed up my taxes until I used Turbotax (turbotax.com). This year I'm condiering using H&R Block's online tax preparation and e-filing. Products like these cost money but they are relatively easy to use and can ensure your taxes are filed correctly.
