Tomorrow England will ban smoking in public places. I smoke 20 a day, and add £20 a week in taxes towards the national budget. Smokers pay for the National Health Service 3 times over. If I stop tomorrow, the country loses £20 a week. Plus £300 for the stop-smoking course. Plus lost revenue when I no longer go down the pub.
Do non-smokers really think they are going to keep the British pub alive? |

I know where you are coming from but with so much of the cigs coming into the UK bootlegged, there isn't going to be as much tax lost as you might think.
Personally I think the Government should put it's money where it's mouth is. If they must ban smoking at all then they should stop taxing domestic Tobacco sales completely.
Why should they continue to extort taxes from addicts, if they are indeed doing this for our benefit. |

Since smokers may well use the NHS resources more than non-smokers, it would be right if they paid more, but they don't. Tobacco taxes pay for a lot more than that. Don't pretend that you smoke for the good of the Treasury!
Also, why do you have to stop going to the pub if you give up or cannot smoke? Is one activity dependent on the other?
I used to smoke upwards of 30 a day, sometimes under stress 60 a day, (I had a particularly stressful activity for about three months during the year). I gave up without aid more than 35 years ago. I still go down the pub and enjoy many other activities that I did while a smoker. You do not have to smoke, or use aids to quit (try will power!), or inflict your habit on others. The country will find other ways of raising the revenue, and the British pub will survive, even flourish. |

As for the matter of tax's , if the govenment lose money because of people stopping , they will put tax's up someware else
As for the non smokers keeping the pubs open , well I doubt they will , but that won't worry them .
I am waiting for all the people that ,as I call them the anti mob , to start complaing because the things they like are under attack . |

There are some excellent points in you question, which I have been arguing at work about all day. I work for the NHS part time at weekends and we are not going to be able to smoke on the premises. We have to walk up to the road and then hide our uniforms. What do we do with our butts? (ciggarette buts, not behind butts) Surely it was better when we could hide in corners so as not be seen by the general public. I know we dont have a 'right' to smoke at work but surely better provisions could have been made for us.
Oh and just to add a bit more. Football players of all ages use up more NHS time than any other. Ask anyone in A&E. |

Perhaps they really don't care.
One by one they are turning all the pubs in to restuarants with kiddy facilities and tv anyway.
No decent smoke rooms or pool tables left.
me, I'll be standing outside with the gang under an umbrella seeing how much smoke we can collect !
If everyone in the country gives up smoking the country will be bankrupt within a week and all the money grabbing politicians will be signing on at the job center !!! |

ohh... that's retarded. You cannot smoke in a pub?? I think you're wrong on that buddy. You cannot smoke in a bus, restaurant etc but in PUB?
You should move to Kentucky or something. You can smoke wherever you want but the Shopping mall /small stores
