katrina | Which bills do i 'have' to pay during the recession in the uk? |
Obviously all bills count, but my bloke works as a painter and decorator ( for now, work disintergrating fast ) and I work with mental health, My job is safe but he is the breadwinner. Mortgage is no 1 in my priority but do I not pay the rest of them to ensure I can make the payments on the mortgage as to not lose the house, or pay the other mountain of billls as to not fall months behind on arrears...
Heres to wishing I was on the dole and had all my bills paid for by the taxpayers and lived in complete ignorance to the destruction you have done
No i'm not nasty, I just wish people would get up and provide for their own offspring as me and mine have for years and now have to struggle like hell for what you have had so easy before.
You idol so and so's.
Any answers from the working class will be acknowleged, Thanks, Mnm |

I wouldn't knock the 'Dole' or Income Support or Working Tax Credits... They are there as a safety net for unfortunate situations... Your husband may be grateful of it should his work dry up too much!
I do agree that once on the 'dole' the other benefits make it hard to get motivated to get back to work and out of the 'benefit trap'.
You have branded everyone on benefits as 'idle so and so's' which is unfair and a bit of a sweeping statement.
I wouldn't like to go back to the years wher you ended up in a work house if you hit financial difficulties.
I do appreciate your aggrevation and frustration that your income has dropped with the downturn in your partner's business, but please don't be bitter to the rest of humanity... it's not their fault!
Go on to Martin Lewis' Money Expert website... it will really help and inspire you to adapt to your circumstances: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com
Best of luck, and I hope your situation improves soon. |

Firstly let us dispel the myth that people out of work on the dole get their bills payed for them. They certainly do not.
You should contact your lender for the mortgage and explain the situation and they might allow you to make interest only payments. The key is to talk to them and not suddenly stop paying. They need to know your circumstances and then they WILL help. Other bills such as utilities must be paid or you will be cut off. You will just have to cut down on gas and electricity usage. Shop wisely and no convenience food or meals out. I have been through it after being made redundant a few times and when self employed as a decorator. Tell your partner to make a reduction in his rates when quoting for work and get the work at a reduced profit. Then you will survive. |

Hi There
You need to pay the Priority bills which would be mortgage rent, water gas and electric, all others are not classed as a priority bill. I found this out when i went to the citizens advice bureau! In all cases though you should make contact with your debtors and advise them that you are struggling, they may reduce your payments.
I understand what you mean though about people on the dole, my friend gets money, she get housing benefits so her rent is reduced, council tax benefit so that is also reduced! She then has money to pay bills and survive, she gets nearly as much as what me and my husband earn and we are struggling! Neither of them work, and their kids are always kitted up in the nicest clothes! They dont care about the recession!
It really isn't fair! But our government doesn't care about the working class families.
Sorry Rant over!! Good luck with sorting everything out |

I would advise you to pay all your bills in time. Then talk to the mortgage lender about your current financial situation. The government is finding ways to get the economy out of the recession. So soon more jobs can be found for painter and decorator. With employment and income your husband can help to pay the mortgage. Things will be fine soon. |

Well of course, the answer is that you must pay all your bills I bet there are even 'idle so and so's' on the dole who pay all their bills...
The key to surviving the coming recession is to make a budget so you can do exactly that (Pay all bills)
I have been doing this for about two years since we decided to try and survive on one income - we have a very strict budget for the amount that we allow ourselves to spend on food each week and that enables us to meet all of our bills.
My best advice is to get rid of any debt you have by getting it put onto a 0% credit card - NEVER use the card and pay it off at a reasonable rate - when it runs out, take another one out.. (I am on my third!)
http://www.thecreditcruncher.com/2008/07/credit-card-update.html
Any debts that you do not pay will catch up with you eventually - you will have to work out a way to pay them all, budgeting is a must, it will help you to discover where you can save money.

One of the quickest ways to get more money in your pocket is to look really hard at where your money goes. |

If you are on the dole you certainly do not get all bills paid.
Basically you get some or all of your rent and some or all of your council tax.
For the first 9 months you do not get your mortgage paid and then only the interest up to a maximum.
As others say you must do two things: decrease expenses and increase income.
Can your husband not take on extra - private - work? If not can he not get an additional job working in a pub or as a delivery driver for example? Can you take on extra hours? Have you a posh car that you could sell and get a cheaper one?
Could you take in a lodger? You can earn £4000+ from that without paying Income Tax!
If you do not pay the other bills they will - ultimately - take you to court and apply for bankruptcy. If granted the court will sell your house. It may take a while but it can happen!
I am not unsympathetic, believe me! I've been down that route. At one stage I have a daytime job, worked 5 evenings a week as a mini-cab driver and worked in a bar at weekends. Often home at 2am so sleep is valuable! We survived; I think it was worth it. |

Years ago I was told by a Housing Officer to pay bills first as an eviction or repossession takes months to do whereas cutting off electric, gas etc can be done with a flick of a switch. In saying that though if you lose your home there is no point in having electric gas etc. Sorry if that's not very helpful but I don't have the answer either!

Gemma O too the words out of my mouth. i had financial trouble when i fell pregnant with my first child. i had to go to the citizens advice bureaux as well because i had a debt collector who was very threatening and bullying. i felt a bit....i dunno. it sent me into nothing short of a depression anyway.
have look at this, it's what Gemma was referring to.
http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/pdf/self_help_pack/workingout_pbs.pdf
if i hadn't used this, i probably would still be up to my eyeballs in debt. nowadays, my creditors are all but a couple of months away from being paid off completely, my home is safe and baby number two is on the way.
don't stress, it's not healthy. just deal with this in a calm responsible way and don't get arsy with your creditors, that doesn't do any favours. they'd rather an honest repayable figure regularly than false promises.
good luck.x |
